i have a 97 cavalier with a 2.2 5sp that knocks i was going to rering and bearing it and was told to put pistons for a 98 2.2 in it and i would get some more horses and compression cause they change the heads from 97 to 98 and the 98 pistons will clear the 97 head has anyone done or heard of this? any info will be great. thanks for your time,
the head change is true, but i'm not sure on the piston design.
it'll be gutless either way, I say just stick to what you got so you know for sure it'll work.
changing compression a significant amount (0.5 or more) will open up a whole new can of worms with your computer.. tuning will be required via HPT at the bare minimum.

4 Cams...32 Valves...5 Liters...This Could Get Fun!
Could you tell us why it would be so high? Does the 98 have domed pistons? I thought just the head was changed between 97-98.
the 98 had higher compression than the 95-97, so whereas the pistons aren't domed, the dish is shallower, thus bumping compression higher.
that, and the combustion chamber size is much less than the older 2.2 I believe.
so smaller dish smaller chamber more horses?
What would be the max usable compression? Could you use thicker head gasket and fly-cut some of the piston dome or is the whole idea QFT?
