1 month old rims, hit a drive shaft, #$#@%!!!!!!
Friday, May 13, 2005 10:03 AM
Ive had my rims for about a month, last thursday Im on my way home from work.
All of a sudden I see a drive shaft in the middle of the lane, a big out of a truck. I couldn't not change lanes because I was boxed in but I was able to swerve enought to hit it on my passenger side wheels rather than have it tear up my underside and oilpan, etc.
I went over it, hit both wheels, I see the guy walking from the truck on the right side of the highway walking out to get the damn driveshaft. He obviously was not going anywhere!!
I drove for about half a mile and pulled over where it was safe, inspected everything, didn't see any damage (thinking to myself ohh I couldn't be that lucky) So I get back in and go down to the next exit, turn around go back get on the overpass right next to where the guy had his truck parked. Got out, got my video camera and got his license plate.
By this time he was gone, he must have had someone pick him up. I got the time and everything on my camera.
I wanted to all the cops but I didn't have the local number and I didn't want to waste a 911 call during rush hour so I decided to go home.
Next week I took it in to Tire discounters, had them look everything over and do an alignment. The mechanic said he couldn't see anything wrong with it. I had been hearing a slight popping noise when I slow down to around 10mhp intermitantly when I stop. He said he heard it but didn't know what it was and it was probabally a piece of the body that came loose.
Next day on the way home Im cruising at 70mph on the highway and notice a unusual vibration. I get home and look at the lip on my front passenger wheel and noticed it was bent good. The side of the tire was a little scuffed. But the guys at the tire place had not caught it. So I took it to them and they said they would unmount both tires for me today after work and check the rims out real good and maybe see if they could fix the bent one with a rubber mallet.
Anyways I am replacing the front rim no matter what, there are too small cuts in the metal where the driveshaft hit on right on the edge of the lip.
I went and filed a police report, I had the guys license plate and everything printed out.
All the sheriff said he could do was file a damage report. I dont think he even took the guys plate number.
So Im going to go talk to my insurance and see what they can do. Maybe they can track the guy down. I think the rim would only be 150-200 but Im not sure what the popping noise could be, the brakes seem to work fine.

This just F'N pissed me off so much I haven't had these rims a month and something rediculous like this happens, ive never hit anything like this before. Just more crap to deal with and its slowing me down from working on the rest of the car. It seems to drive fine except for the vibe at high speed right now, hopefully nothing else is seriously damaged I dont know what else it could be. I might post a pic when I get some time.

HDaF' does a damn drive shaft fall out of a damn Chevy Silverado??

you shoulda had enough groudn clearance to get over the thing i woudl think. unless your majorly lowered. drivaeshafts aren't that tall and going directly overtop of it you might of missed it totally.

sucsk to hear though, hope you get it fixed.

its not really his fault his drive shaft broke. you even said he was walking around the truck to go pick it up.

Either that or he was a moron and had his driveshaft out at one point, put it back in the wrong way or something. The things you find on the highway. Hope you get everything paid for man.

i've seen some driveshafts laying on the ground before, and if its laying the correct way you will hit it, even at a stock height on a cavalier..

Some aluminum driveshafts are very big.
I drove behind (at a distance) a cherokee with one end of the d.s. dragging on the ground. kinda funny seeing the sparks fly.
But that suck dude. hope it works out.

The vibrations could be the bearings or ball joint. And.... F'in hicks!
