2009 Hyundai Genesis (Pontiac G8 watch out)
Tuesday, January 08, 2008 9:10 AM

Hyundai says its upcoming Genesis sedan, set to debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is a $60,000 sports sedan with a price of less than $30,000.
Hyundai's first crack at the luxury market is built on a new rear-wheel-drive platform. Three engines will be offered: A 3.3-liter V6 (268 hp); a 3.8-liter V6 (290 hp); and Hyundai's new 4.6-liter V8. The V8 will pump an estimated 368 horsepower. Both V6s and the V8 are mated to ZF six speed transmissions.
Hyundai’s new rear-drive BH platform that took four years and $540 million to develop and will yield more products in the years to come. The V-8 family also will grow, with future variants promised with larger displacement, forced induction options, and other enhancements. Suspension is a five-link front and rear set up
John Krafcik, the company's product development, says the Genesis goes against the Chrysler 300 and Pontiac G8, though its engineering targets included the Mercedes E-Class, Infiniti M and Lexus GS. Hyundai is modestly projecting first-year sales of 20,000 after it goes on sale this summer.
Hyundai showed a coupe concept using the sedan's platform at the Los Angeles auto show in November.

Yikes, that's not bad at all.

Too bad for the RWD though.

id still own a G8 before that

but im sure it will hurt the sales of the G8 , having a better warranty

Hyundai sure has come a LONG way from this:
My folks actually bought a brand spanking new Pony back in 86...
lol oh the good times.... we had a blown head gasket at 6k and
it would rust if you merely looked at the paint the wrong way.

^^^ why does that look like a dodge

lol

I think the dodge omni was light years ahead of the Pony.

I do remember that our Pony was equipped with the deluxe package which included: vinyl/ velour seats, and a rear wiper lol The sound of the upgraded 70hp motor more than made up for the lack of a radio (lord only knows what the base motor made). Surprisingly, it was a roomy car for camping trips, and you could get it up to 90mph (assuming you had enough road, and you weren't afraid of dying).

so yeah... the Genesis looks like it's a bit of an improvement over the Pony lol.

They should play with the tibby chassis and throw in the RWD V8 in that beast

It certainly looks like it will be nice, and from everything i've heard through the grapevine it's going to be a great performer. The genesis coupe also looks like it will be a nice auto. I hope they don't stop at the 3.8L in the coupe and throw the v-8 in it. This will be the last year for the tibby. it is being partially replaced by the genesis and by a fwd coupe similar to the current tib on a diet. it will most likely sport the 2.0l turbo from the base genesis coupe.

I'll let everyone know what the genesis drives like once our dealer gets one.

Hyundai has made leaps and bounds in terms of quality control and reliability. They still have some work to do before they are considered to be in the top-tier of entry-level vehicles, but they are getting there.

Sorry but i call B.S. on this. you'll have to show some reliable souces. since countless test mules for the next Tib have been spotted...and my latest Road & Track reports Hyundai has said they don't plan to drop or replace the FWD Tiburon.

Looks awesome, and it is most likely a great car. But I don't think I'd ever have to choose between that and a G8. This one looks like a classy old man's car, the G8 looks sporty in my opinion.

I'm not really a fan of the exterior, but I'm definitely a fan of the overall idea... Now they just need to put out that lightweight rwd coupe with a turbo 4 or 6 and I'll be a hyundai fan for life....

Ok who told you this then? I'm not trying to flame you, so don't take this as an attack. I'm just trying to find out where you heard this since this is news to the entire Tiburon community. But if you google "Tiburon cancelled" nothing comes up, and as i stated it was said in my latest Road & Track that a new Tib is coming, and there are spy pics all over the net, and most important....nobody on "NewTiburon.com" has heard what your your implying...And if you know, they know. And they don't know what your talking about, so there is a lot of facts that don't support "what you've heard". I'd like a reliable link to support your point...Or is this is just a rumor you've heard. Because it sounds like your passing it off as fact, and there is nothing to support it.

No worries, I'm just curious. If it's a rumor i'm o.k. with that. But you seem pretty certain and nobody else has heard that, so i'm wondering where you heard it that your so sure.

I heard this from, the last time i was talking to the marketing director of Hyundai Canada. What he told me was the Tiburon, as we know it, will be discontinued. It was going to be replaced by both the genesis coupe and a new coupe which from what he had heard at that point was not going to continue on the Tiburon name. Now of course with this so far away god only knows maybe they will keep it. Hyundai is not big on vehicle name changes. But yes it is a rumor, and there is nothing in writing, i have, which backs up what I'm saying, just passing along some information from a credible source. I would like to see the name continue and put out a nice competitor named a Tiburon. Again from what i was told (and the conversation probably happened 3 weeks ago) it looked like they were veering away from that nameplate.

I think what's so great about the car is that just by looking at it you wouldn't suspect this car is a Hyundai as it's missing the all to familiar Hyundai logo. The front does remind me of a hybrid combination of the concept S-Class car grill and last generation Toyota Camry (mainly head lamps). It's be a tough choice between this and the G8 for me, if I was in the market.
