PITA 69' C/10
Tuesday, March 11, 2008 7:17 AM
Ok, i need to vent. This truck doesnt want to get built. All the research my buddy and i have done supports the idea that 60-66 and 67-72 front suspensions are swappable. They are not. I had to toss my original suspension and crossmember due to rust damage. No biggie, i just bought basically the whole front frame clip off my buddy's 64' c/10 parts truck. My 69' and the 64' are both 1/2 tons. I went out and got the 64' stuff power coated and drilled for my airbag brackets. I get home and attempt to bolt it on and all the holes are off by 1/2".

I call my buddy and tell him. He doesnt believe me since our research says it should fit. He sees that it doesnt, so we take a ride and get his crossmember from his project truck (66 3/4 ton). This crossmember bolts to the frame, but my nice power coated lower control arms dont bolt up. I dont want to drill new holes to mount the 64' suspension on the 66' member cuz i dont want to ruin the integrity of the member. Also the mounting points for the lower control arms are off by 1" between my original 69' member and the 66' member, which will alter my suspension geometry.

I thought i was soooooo close to actually see some progress on this damn thing. But i actually have to backtrack and waste more money just to get the right crossmember. I have had this truck for 3 years and im tired of seeing it as a bare, half painted, rusted frame. This truck its going to be a play/show truck.

Any org member know where there is a 67-72 front crossmember?

i know alot of the 67-72 guy were using the 73-87 front brakes , it was the easy install for disk brakes

i just dont remember if it was a spindle change or if they used the whole thing

I already have 2 1/2" drop spindles for the front that require those disc brakes. The spindles accept the 69' ball joint. Im not worried about the disc brake upgrade, its gettin a freakin crossmember that works. I really want to see my frame on tires and bagged.

I really dont want to have to pull one from a complete truck from the junkyard. It requires the removal of the engine and suspension. An if you remove the fenders it makes it soo much easier.

I have been ordering my resto parts from LMC, but the crossmember and brackets are not reproduced. That is my problem with it now.

Are you sure you want that?^^^^^^ That cab is borderline on being junked, the cab corners, inner/outer rockers, and the whole floor need to be replaced. The only things that arent junked that you dont see in the pic are the doors, hood, and grill.

Here are a few original pic from when i brought it home. There was a hole in the brake lines somewhere and thats the reason it went straight into the garage. Yes, that is aluminium siding covering up the rust holes.

The frame is not bent, the passenger side cab mounts are nonexistent.

It was last inspected in 1999 and parked due to the brake issue. But hey i picked it up locally for $300, what more could i ask for?

[quote=97cavie24ls(™)]wtf did they do to the wheel well on the bed ?

Aluminium siding. Screwed and riveted on. The body was/is 25% aluminium siding, 75% rust/sheet metal. That bed is not being reused, its too far gone. But it is staying a stepside.

3.08 open GM-12 bolt, 5-lug. Thats just not gonna work, but what to do about it?

Hmmmmm these parts should work......

Back from the dead. Im thinking about tossing some money around and actually working on the thing, but first. The cab has been junked and i am about 90% sure that im not going to bag it. So that means i have some airride stuff sitting around that i dont need. The new set-up is proboly going to be drop springs in the front and coil-overs in the rear.

Nice project I just picked up a 71 k10 long bed. I'd start looking around for a better cab before you do anything. Are you on www.67-72chevytrucks.com

Rob - no im not on there. I will be looking for a new cab after i get a rolling chassis so i can immediately put the cab on it. That way its not taking up space.

John - Off the top of my head, 4 bags, 2 pancake tanks, air fittings, a bracket kit to bag the front of a 67-72 chevy truck. I got everything from suicidedoors.com years ago. The bags are Airlift Easystreet and i forget the exact model.

ive had a 67, 70, and a 72 c10 on the 70 i swapped out the frt. brakes and suspension for stuff off a 84 c10 and really had no probs, then i got the rear end with rear disc off a 02 silverado and swapped that in that had some work to it but my buddy is good at that stuff so we got it to work.... wish i would never have sold it.

My car was made with wrenches, Not chopsticks.
