if you had 2500-.3000 to spend on a car that should last you 3-4 years, what would you buy. I'm looking at cavaliers, sunbirds, and saturn sc2. Any thing else I should look at, i like domestics more and it has to be a 2dr 5 speed car.

What you said (Cav/Sun/SC2), but I'd check out Ford Escort ZX3s too. They're strong runners.
saturn!!! everything is SIMPLE to work on IF you need anything
Suzuki Sidekick/Geo Tracker hands down the best $2500 car you can buy. Reliable, 4wd, convertable, 30mpg. It gets no better

$2500 for good used tracker
$700 for 2 inch body lift, 2 inch suspension lift. And you can have something just like these....
Even the 4-doors look nice lifted.
And these 2 are/were my own personal trucks. I sold the red one a few years back and still drive the white one a 1995 with 122,000 and still runs like new. it only has a 3 inch suspenion lift on it and it makes a big difference in the look of the truck.
...and you're all set for a lot of fun and a vehicle that can tow, have top down fun in the summer, real 4WD for off-roading/snow, bullitproof reliability, can easily hold 4 people comfortably. For $2500 you can buy a wannabe sport coupe or a real off-road machine that's fun to drive.
There is a huge aftermarket for Suzuki/Geo trucks, a great place to start is at
Calmini but that's just one company of many. Sort of the RKSport of the Suzuki world. You can also DIY lift kits swaping springs and shocks/struts from other vehicles.
Even if you keep it bone stock it will run forever and be a lot of fun to drive. They are the best kept used car secret in the world.

Sorry new budget. Decided I don't want to spend that much. I found a 96 Cavalier with 130k for 1200. So basically, would this car be reliable, does it have a timing chain? If not I will keep more car for now. Thanks for the feedback tho.

you didnt specify if it was a z24 or base model so i dont know if its a 2.4 or 2.2... but yes it has a timing chain... both the 2.4 and 2.2 do... i believe the 2.3 also did...

I've decided to save my money for now and just keep the car I have. I will hold out for another year or two and buy a newer ecotec car.

my kill list:a geo metro and a mac semi wow did i kill that thing
Jooky those tracker are awesome. never thought of lifting one. How bad does it hurt the performance, gas mileage, and ride quality when you add the lift and tires? I know it hurt it all pretty bad with my jeep. thats why I ask.
