My new car!!
Saturday, May 02, 2009 1:28 PM
Well I picked this up a couple days ago and I'm absolutely in love with it. It's an 06 Volkswagen GTI, it's got a 2.0 turbocharged 6 speed. It's nice to finally be in a nice quality car, especially after driving a modded cavalier for the past 6 years. Well the only plans for it is to paint the lower bumpers to match the body color and get the APR chip, other than that it is staying stock. C&C welcome.

I know I'm about to hear it from Darkstars about how much of a POS it is, but I expect it.

Looks sexy. Other then what you wanna do I would add a small drop and some huffs.

I really don't like the huffs, I know most do but I guess it's just not my style and I actually like the wheels that came with it ( plus they are BRAND NEW tires). I would love to drop it but I don't want to sacrifice the stock ride at all. Thanks for the comments though

Nice pickup!! Im not realy a fan of how they look, but Im sure their pretty fun to drive! You say you wont mod it, but with any kind of performance oriented car we all know how that turns out

Very nice car!

If you're an electrician or good in electronics you'll love this project car! Trust me.

I hope you bought a nice long extended warranty with it or bought it certified used..... your either gonna wish you did or be glad you did when the fuel pump eats the intake cam.

btw that little plastic section sitting out of the top of the washer fluid bottle facing the engine, cut that off with some side cutters. It's more of an issue on the 2.5's but that little tab has been known to rub holes and puncture the fuel line running next to it.

I dig it. It's a fun car, enjoy it.

Also see about getting a better BOV or recirc valve, cause the diaphrams inside likes to tear (stock or even more likely with added boost)

It actually still has the factory warranty for a while but after that's up I'm SOL I guess. Why does the fuel pump ruin the intake cam? I'm just curious and is there anything I can do to prevent it? Are there any other precautions you recommend I take to help prevent future problems, I'm still very very new to the car and have a lot of researching and I'd love to get some insider tips from someone who actually knows their stuff with the platform.

Yeah I'm seeing that a lot of peoples fail after going with a chip, it may be worth the extra $150 just for the reliability factor.

there are 2 fuel pumps, the intank pump feeds fuel up to a high pressure pump (high pressure meaning about 2,000 psi, NEVER open up the high pressure lines without getting rid of the pressure). In order to make a pump put out that high of a pressure there is an extra lobe on the intake cam (its actually shaped like a big triangle, 3 lobes on it) and thats what runns the high pressure pump. VW cheaped out on the early FSI's and the metal the cam was made out of was to weak, the cam lobe get worn off, it eats through the follower and usually wrecks the pump. I can't even tell you how many 05-06 2.0T's I've had to but cams and pumps in. There's no real way to avoid it, the metal isn't as strong as it should have been. PM me your vin # I can check your warranty history from my laptop, I'll see if its been done before.

I'm not sure what kind of tips you want? Check the oil often, VW says it's "normal" to burn 1/2 qt every 600 miles, it's surprisingly common for people to come in for oil changes (every 5K) complaining the low oil pressure light is on, when you check the oil it take a quart or so just to start showing up on the dipstick. Do NOT use your wipers as a snow brush, it will break the wiper trans. How much time is left on your warranty? I can let you know some things to complain about to get taken care of while you can.

I thought it was kinda stupid when they came out with the mkV it's either dark gray leather or the plaid (the plaid is part of the GTi's heritage, VW's way of jumping on the retro bandwagon was dropping the Golf name and going back to calling it a Rabbit and putting plaid in the GTI's

Love the plaid interior, too freaking cool. Besides painting the rear and adding a lip kit, might I suggest the 18" big 5-spoke VW rims like these? Those look so much sexier...

Those are the huffs that Anthony suggested and they really are just not my style. I've always had a thing for a lot of spokes in my wheels, heck look at the cavy and you'll see. I'm probably going to paint these wheels sometime this spring and hope the turn out better. Here are a couple more quick pics...

On topic: glad youre happy with the new ride... but i have trouble believeing that you're ONLY going to lower it and chip it (i heard the APR chips are like magic!)

secondly: I get a small feeling of joy everytime Darkstars disses on a VW because I feel the same way, only he has real actual experiences/reasons to hate on it...... but that joy is quickly put to rest when I remember that we have a VW in the garage...
