the real replacement for the GTP

picked her up today

she's an 89 RS with a 350 4 bolt main bored .040 with World heads, some... eh, not stock internals (dont remember off the top of my head) 700R4 tranny with a B&M stage 2 shift kit and rachet shifter. eibach springs and sway bars, KYB struts, and all new stearing. he left it as a TBI, but bored it out and gave it a chip. first mod will be replacing that with a carb setup.

on the way down there, got my first visual of one of these

not as big as i thought it would be, but still a pretty good sized car

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

that's exactly what i was thinking. i thought he fell into a giant hole and couldnt get out or somethin

yep, stock color, original paint. it's got some chips and such, that will be fixed over the winter. it's been garage kept for 12 years, and will continue to be so through it's life with me. i went to pick it up only knowing the engine mods, i get there and he started listing the suspension things done to it, and i got all giddy inside. here's the kicker, when he swapped the car over to 30th anniv. seats, he was going to swap the whole interior over to gray from the porno red... so he pulled the seat belts and never put any new ones in. so now i own a car without seatbelts. gotta get a hold of a salvage yard and try to find a set. joy oh joy

Amazing muscle man. How is the underbody? Sometimes you get sleepers... i mean mint on top, not so mint underneath.

And i wish i could see a GTR in central Pennsylvania. =P

Re: the real replacement for the GTP

underside is about 95%. gonna hit it with some rust preventative in the next few weeks. but the car wont see rain, so it shouldnt get much worse.

and im not a fan of TBI either. and a TPI swap will cost quite a bit. carb is a happy medium. since it's not my daily, im not as worried about ease and gas milage

Alot of folks just taking a glance would think that its carbed though

TPI swap cant be all that much?

I like it. Seems to be in good shape. Although not my favorite generation for F-bodies, it looks clean! It just REALLY bugs me for someone to buy a modded car and not know or research the mods inside the motor...

Clean car man, I really dig the color on it too.

Off topic... I got to check out a GTR at a gas station here (in the middle of Iowa of all places) about 3 - 4 weeks ago. Crazy beautiful cars, I like them much more in person than in pics. Pics do them absolutely no justice whatsoever.

As a side note, WTF is all that blue tape on the GTR? is he goin to the bash?????

Haha, no... he is just saving rock chips on a car that is worth saving from rock chips.

I mean, this is a car where the blue tape doesn't actually increase the value of the vehicle. lol

A carb will mke more overall power and absolutely 100% make a @!#$load more top end power. TPI is good for low end torque, that is just about it.

That color is win. Nice pick up.

If you change your mind to keep tbi I can give you some sites for performance parts, my entire tbi system is brand new and high performance. Even found TBI superchargers.

Carb is an easy and cheap switch, but unless you plan on a major upgrade (cam, new engine, etc) tbi would suit you fine, and you can get some cheap upgrades for it and if the tbi is running with the current setup id go with the old saying 'if its anit broke, dont fix it'

You can get a entire tpi system up to and uncluding the computer for like 2 grand.

thirdgen.org son know it, love it.

we went over the whole mod list while we were there. and i've got it written down. just havent memorized it yet. it's a pretty lengthy list. HS roller rockers, Comp cam w. 470 lift 224 duration on I/E, double roller chain, high energy pushrods, dont remember the lifter brand, stock crank, forged rods, forged flat top pistons, edelbrock TBI intake and throttle body with somethin about a 50mm bore, i dont know if that's per side of the TBI or what. it also is runnin a 90 impala SS TBI chip.

as borsty said, you can get TPI systems, but it'll cost ya. i've found 670 carbs that dont need rebuilt for around $100, and intakes are around $90. much cheaper than buying the full TPI setup and swapping computers and wiring harnesses. the TBI will do for now, though. just gonna drive it and enjoy it for a while. only thing that will be getting done to it during the summer is cleaning it up.... and installing seat belts.

and, i've spent more time on thirdgen.org in the past week than any other site... think i've read about 70% of the entire forum by now

Does it run well with the tbi?

if u switch over your going to need a fuel pressure regulator too, the electric fuel pump is way too high psi for a carb. or switch to a mechanic fuel pump, but thats a pain in the ass

yep, it'll get a regulator. not doin a carb pump swap. it runs ok with the TBI. but it feels like it wants some more
