I live in Michigan + winters suck even for fed, so I am looking to go awd. I want a four door + decent mpg... Hence the interest in Subaru. My budget is under 7k (don't care about turbo) what is the reliability on this brand.?

It can be Subaru Justy tiem nao?
Seriously though, the two Subaru owners I know have both had problems. One of the girls at work has a Legacy that had electrical gremlins that took months to get fixed, and no less than three dealers trying to fix it. The other is my mother-in-law's Impreza base (08 or 09, can't remember), which had a strut problem in it's first year of life.
2010 Honda Fit LX
Older outbacks had some transfer case problems if the owners used different size tires or beat on it a little.

I have a 2007 2.5i and have had no problems with it. It currently has about 53000 miles on it and still going great and its awesome in the snow!
I have heard that overall Subarus are one of the most reliable cars you can get, as long as you maintain them. I have also heard that while they are very reliable, if you DO have a problem with one, they can be very hard to diagnose and fix sometimes. Thats why you hear about people having months and months trying to fix the same problem.
dont know too much about reliability, but I know they're costly to fix

You need AWD in Flint?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA Sorry, I find this funny.
my brother owns an 04 wrx. from what i have seen it has been very reliable. the car has never had downtime unless it was being upgraded. car has yet to have a single problem and he beats on it almost everyday pushing 280whp on a conservative tune getting retuned soon for 300+. its all in the maintenance, car is very easy to work on ive done all his upgrades, but if you're not doing basic maintenance be prepared to pay a bit more at your mechanic and even more at the dealer. my friends brother has a 06 2.5 and the car has yet to see any problems after about 3 years of owning it.
you pretty much can't go wrong with the 2.5 block. Which covers older Subaru Legacies, and newer 2.5s. Its not unheard of for a scooby to pull 300K miles.

Oddly enough, I bought my Subaru for about $7,000. It's a '99 Outback wagon, bought with 103,xxx miles back in May of 2005. It just rolled over 140,xxx miles this past weekend. Best car purchase ever. It will get you through hell & high water! Never been stuck in any snow thrown my way, I used to use it to flatten the snow in our ally where we parked at our old house so other cars could get in & out. Great for long distance travel, great for bikes & dogs. We hauled a bath tub IN packaging with the hatch closed. It'll easily fit appliances with a kid seat in the back haha! Love it. No major issues, but you should know Subarus like only Subaru ignition parts. If you cheap out, it'll let you know!

subaru's don't have transfer cases. maybe a bad center diff.
they are reliable. 2.5 dohc's have headgasket problems (aka buy one, plan on changing the gaskets unless they've already been done)
other than that, my wrx has 120k on it with no issues, my gf's outback sport wagon has 121k on it and has only needed a wheel bearing and an axle replaced so far, the 95 legacy wagon we have has 200k on it and just now needs head gaskets (previous owner being my gf's brother who knows nothing about maintenance and has destroyed more cars than i'll probably own in my life time), my legacy wagon that i used to have has over 150k on it and still runs fine (i work with the new owner)
if you're good to your subaru, it'll be good to you.
Speaking of an axle replacement, I guess I could say that's the most major repair done to mine. The cv boot was ripped, so the axle was replaced. Odd, common & annoying thing, at least with the Outback, when you put in a new axle - there tends to be a lot more vibration transferred to the body of the car after an axle replacement. We actually took it back to the dealership after the axle went in because it felt horrible, violent shaking when stopped at lights & I'd even switch it to neutral to get it to stop when it was really bad. We found tons of cases of this posted online & apparently there's no fix. The repair was done back in the spring & the shaking doesn't get so bad now - or I'm used to it. That's my only complaint.
replacement of our axle was due to ripped cv boot as well. we changed ours out on our own and had no vibration problems. (the outback vs. outback sport probably has different cv angles though due to the higher stance on the outback.

Thanks for fixing my stupidity. Yes, that is what I was talking about.

I rolled my moms Subaru forester when i was 16,flipped it back over and my dad drove it to the garage..had 70k on it with no problems minus the door gap lining up..due to me.
She now has an 08 legacy and it runs like a beast...had it out in 8 inches of snow, and just hugged the road and i was hammering on it(mom got a little scared)
I've wanted a wrx forever...if the insurance wasn't silly for me i prolly would have bought one.You could get an 02-03 wrx for around 8 k if you shop.
Their great cars if you take care of them

Where did he say he needed it? Just because someone lives in, or near Flint, doesn't mean they don't travel the rest of the state in the winter. Besides, with Flint as broke as it is the snow melts before it gets cleared.

The cost of insurance for you is not "silly". It is justified. Your immaturity is blatantly obvious.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
Eh, I wouldn't mind a Subie. An outback would be nice....Winters are nuts around here anyways....

He implied that it was needed. You dont need AWD or FWD for anything in the lower peninsula. Some places in the UP but even then proper tire slection will get you most places you should even attempt to go. But what do I know, its not like I drive in Mi winters every year.
I still don't see where he implied it was needed, but what do I know I have only driven in 10 MI winters. I had to throw that in.
If he said he needed it for Flint winters i'd share a laugh with you. Did I ever NEED AWD in MI, hell no, were there times it would have been nice? Hell yes!
If I still lived in MI i'd be driving an sti or evo for sure.
I only drive my truck in the winter because of the @!#$ty ass roads in the Metro Detroit area. I think i used 4WD maybe 3 times last year and that was only as a precaution, well the first time was just to make sure it worked. I have no problem driving a Cav in teh winter. I would probably do better than my truck in most instances.
Maybe I just percieved it wrong but to me it seems as if he thinks he needs AWD. If I could afford it/didnt have to worry about it being vandalised at work, I would love to have a WRX wagon as a winter "beater".
Maybe he wants AWD so he can go out and play in the snow too.
Which is why i want an STi...i can go fast..carry 4 to other people and still rock it in the snow
Rememeber kids... spell check is your friend
Not based on his first post.
true...maybe it's piece of mind?
I still think the STi is one of the best bang for the buck cars around..
Rememeber kids... spell check is your friend
Im not going to argue that point. You can have a @!#$ load of fun in a J body though if you know what you are doing and have the right tires.
