General Exhaust Question.
Saturday, November 14, 2009 11:55 AM
Today i had a cherry bomb extreme installed on my truck. Sounds great and i love it. Everything else about my exhaust is stock, headers, y pipe, cat. On the drive home from the shop, i could smell something hot while i was at a light. It passed and i figured it was somebody else at the light. I got home, looked under the truck and saw this:

The muffler started out bright ass red. The drive home was about 10-15 miles, not long at all. After hitting everything with an infrared thermometer, it was determined that the only thing out of the ordinary as far as temperature goes is the muffler itself. The cat, and pipe before and after the muffler are all in the normal range. There is no bluing anywhere except for the clamps that are on the muffler itself.

So the question is, What would cause just the muffler to run so hot? Everything up/down stream is in the "normal" temp range, but the muffler is all burnt up. None of us think its a plugged cat. The truck hasnt lost any power, and the cat is running at the normal temp. Deffective muffler somehow? maybe the baffling is @!#$ up?

Just a shot in the dark but did they install the muffler backwards for the way the flow is suppose to go ?

I was curious if that had something to do with it. Its only a 6" chamber.

How close is it to the header? It's definitely getting nice and hot.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.

Its pretty far off from the headers..... theres a y pipe, a cat, and probably 3 feet of piping.

The shop and i are working to try to figure out what the problem could be. We dont want to throw another one on there and have the same thing happen. The shop has been very professional about the whole thing, great customer service.

maybe the paint melting off, is what heated it up. Give it a few more days.

So those arent coated with high heat paint? That's pretty lame.

When i sent the picture to the shop that did the install, they told me that wasnt right and to come back in so they can look at it.

But its possible that somehow they used the wrong paint.

Its possible the case was stamped backwards, and the flow should be going the other way.

I emailed cherrybomb about it, we'll see what they say. Im under the impression they do use high temp paint.
