The world's largest car manufacturer: Volkswagen-Porsche

Adolf Hitler would be proud! j/k
Toyota's reign as the world's largest automaker didn't last long.
Only a year after the Japanese automaker wrested the title from General Motors for the first time in 80 years, Toyota has been overtaken by the Germans.

Volkswagen-Porsche now is the world's largest car manufacturer, reports the Guardian of London. VW may not hold the title very long, though. It ascent was due to benefits from government stimulus packages around the globe. When those deals run out, Toyota may assert itself again. VW-Porsche had made 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, 400,000 more than Toyota, which cut back production as the global auto meltdown hit. And VW did it by breaking out of its traditional markets:

Not only is VW making Jettas, Passats and Boxsters for America and Europe, it is aggressively selling in China as well. China, in fact, made up a quarter of its global demand. Though Toyota has the capacity to make 10 million vehicles a year, it will only turn out about 7 million in 2009. Last year, it built 9.2 million vehicles, underscoring the depth of the sales slump. Toyota has long said that having the title as the world's largest car maker is not a goal. It says it is focused, instead, on staying profitable and keeping customers happy.

I predict a short reign, unless they do a lot of work to make their cars more reliable. You can kill a VW pretty easy. You can't kill a Toyota without extreme measures. Just gotta wait out for that FT-86 to come out.

More reliable AND more affordable. VW used to make good cars too.

I didnt bother reading because im not interested in any of these cars(mostly because i can't afford them i admit) but is this in terms of number of cars or in terms of profit?

That's also a good point. While abase rabbit was only $16,000 with an automatic (and that was about the only feature it had, everything else was basic), for a similarly options VW to my corolla was $21,000 + freight and GST. My loaded Corolla with Freight was $18,000. The only things my car didn't have out of the dealer options was what came in the S package.

I'm assuming neither of you know what your talking about?

Current VW's are FAR more reliable and better built then they used to be. They used to make good cars!? They I've made unreliable garbage for the past decade. It's very well known on here that I'm always the first to cut down VW, I'm always on the anti VW train and for the first time I will actually defend them, for the first time ever I want one, a Jetta Sportwagen TDI... I'd love to buy one, I would take one over any reasonably priced car out thete right now.

VW sales got a big boost from that piece of shot Routan mini van that Chrysler makes for us, the Jetta is the number 1 seller and the routan is second.

IIRC didn't the info about VW being #1 turn out to be wrong and that it was actually GM followed by VW and then Toyota?

I work on them for a living, I know how/where they rank up, I see what breaks and I know goes wrong. And regardless of their JD Power ranking I can say these new cars are FAR better better then they used to be. After 6 years of it being a problem the windows don't drop into the doors anymore, the strut mounts don't go out left and right, Passat's no longer go through cv boots and control arms on a regular basis, they coolant temp sensors aren't a problem anymore, the brakes last 3 times as long as previous body style cars, the tune ups aren't required as often, I've yet to see the e-brake cables bubble up and seize on any of the current models. The most common complain' ts on the new cars is harsh downshift with the DSG trans, squeaking over bumps form control arm bushings, rattles, XM radio modules, and peeling trim. I've watched first hand the quality go up and the amount of maintenance needed and wear and tear go down. I wonder how many of those "repairs JD Power counts when they come in and get a repair order written on it because the tire pressure light is on and they are to lazy to check there pressures.

Imo almost everything Toyota has is boring as hell. Excluding Lexus and xrs models.
