I used to see this often when I was at MB. Some followed the change oil interval from the car (which was to long), and some where cheap bastards, and did not want to pay the outrageous price. All of those had that outcome, one instance I saw almost tar-like on the pan.

Im still not sure what caused this? is this due to the oil not being changed often enough? My car says do it once a year, my SA advised twice a year if I plan on keeping the car.
Would there be any signs of this? like a complete lack of performance??

I know I sound like a newb, just REALLY dont want this to ever happen to my engine!

p.s. not all BMW drivers a duschebags! Some of us come from j-body pasts! haha

Matt - he didn't change his oil for 100,000 kilometers.

I think if you're substantially more vigilent than that you'll be just fine.

ok to you and Goodwrench, no. Not ever car is like American cars. Most BMW's suggest every 7500 miles. Say all you want, it works. Don't be so moronic and narrow minded about foreign cars. I can see that coming soon...

And not ALL BMW owners are dumb @!#$s that go 60K between oil changes for whatever dumb @!#$ reason he did.

I pity you on that you fell for the marketing gimmick. An internal combustion engine, no matter if it is made in Germany or USA, or one cost $20K and the cost $80K, they all have to get their oil changed at reasonable interval. The reason high-priced German vehicles do this, is to lower the ownership cost on their POS, as an oil change will cost you a nearly $200 w/tax (in those times) at the dealer I worked at. I tell you this, because BMW tells me and the advertising company I work for to emphasize on low ownership cost for BMW's new/certified vehicles for their ads. And yes, POFingS, you spend upwards $40-50-60-180K of your hard earned money you expect better quality than $15K-$30K car no? I have seen it as I worked for nearly 5 years in the parts dept for MB and I seen first hand the kind of crap they are, you will not change my judgement on my experience.
If you think because it is German and it has a high price tag = instant quality and lasts forever, then that's your prerogative, German cars are not an example of: (in a good way) "you get what you pay for," in terms of quality and longevity.

So do you guys go with whatever comes first with mileage vs time? Because I usually put about 8K miles a year on my car, which would be a lot fewer oil changes going by miles vs time. I use Mobil 1 synthetic, same weight as OEM rec.

GM switched to an oil life monitor system and some vehicles will not turn on the oil change light till around 15K. I would never take it that far though. A guy I worked with at the last dealer I was at had a M3 and he changed his oil every 3K. It came out just as black and nasty as any GM product that got the same interval. It has nothing to do with where the engine is made, its just a simple matter of normal operating characteristics of every engine. BMW wont even change the oil on your car under the "included maintenance" unless you are at the scheduled interval. Its all about overall owner cost beyond the initial purchase that produces the long intervals.

Im not import hating here. Its just a marketing scheme.

I think in my G6 that my oil life monitor is roughly 50% when I change it. so that would make my interval at 10,000 Km before I chage my oil. No thanks, I want my motor to last.

For Normal service, yes, do you realize what normal service is defined as? Pretty much cruising at highway speeds (Normal highway speeds) almost 100% of the time. Everything else is considered severe service.

Quote:

Notes on "Severe Service"

Since maintenance intervals are affected by climate and operating conditions, customers who operate their vehicles under more arduous conditions, or who's driving habits are markedly different from the "Average" motorist should have a more personalized service program developed for them. This will ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of their vehicle.

Because this manufacturer does not specify a Severe Service Interval, the determination of the proper maintenance interval should be left to the good judgement of the vehicle owner and the advice of an authorized service center.

Conditions that will change the frequency and compostion of Normal Service :

* Operating in dusty, wet or muddy terrain
* Frequent driving in dense city stop and go traffic
* Repeated short trip operation without sufficient engine warm up
* Ambient temperature extremes
* Operating in mountainous/high altitude areas
* Trailer towing

Like everyone else said, its about money, why do you think GM defines normal oil consumption under aggressive driving as 1 qt. every 500 miles? Its about money, it has nothing to do with the car.

Hell, MY brother in law used to bitch when I told him he had to change the oil in my sisters passat every 3k....He did not listen, 3 years into the ownership and that wonderful little passat has 2psi of oil pressure at 3k and a pretty heavy rod knock not to mention cam journals that are about ready to become part of the head... It was partially due to the retarded design of the wonderful german masterpiece (haha, not...) As Volkswagen thinks a 5/8" tube with a screen at the end is sufficient oil pickup. Well it got clogged real quick, and that interval was 7500 according to the manual.

Its all really up to how you drive, but any of my vehicles and my family vehicles, Lets not be a cheapass, I change it every 3k.

Don't waste your time turbo'ing the eta. Not to say it's a bad motor, it's a damn fine, reliable and economical motor, but seriously do a swap before you throw boost at it. FAR more potential in so many swapable motors.

why is it a waste of time? Its got a 185k and im gonna boost it till it blows then swap in a m50. Honestly the thing is gonna be a torque monster under boost. gt28rs at about 8-10 psi should wake it up nicely. plus i just got a 3:73 lsd rear end from a 325is
