a medium grit will be fine, your not trying to sand the old paint off, you just want to scuff it all up so the paint will have more to grab onto. If you using the caliper epoxy you can go with a rough small grit cause its thick and will fill out the gauges and kinda level/flatten itself out. Paint you need to be a little more cautious about it but in reality its your brakes, noone is gonna have there head all up in your wheel inspecting the quality of paint on the brakes.

its mostly corrosion that im fighting, 20 year old calipers that were originally silver, barely resemble silver now, should a primer be used first or just caliper spray paint?

im not looking for show stopper looks I just want them to look clean and not aged

Well you definetly want high temp paint, I haven't personally seen high temp primer

Most advance Auto Parts sells the whole kit, high temp paint, and the cleaner everything you need to clean and paint it. That's what I used and they look good.

I'm not going anywhere just yet

I always see all of these fancy prep steps and such.

I took mine. Cleaned them with laquer thinner and a wire brush. Bought a can of Rustoleum. Foam brushed it on. Its still there 2 years later. No peeling or flaking. Like one rock chip.

But thats just me. The brake kit at Advance just seems silly expensive next to a $2 dollar can of paint and a 39 cent foam brush. Best part is I didnt have to tape anything off or remove the calipers.

i just took a wire brush and took some of the corrosion off then took a die grinder and smoothed out most of the casting defects... then just cleaned it up really good and shot it with some high heat bbq paint... been like that for 2 1/2 years now and they still look like the day i painted em...

So Matt, are you planning on painting them silver? I would recommend doing them black instead because the silver won't stay looking nice for too long. The silver calipers on the Vibes already look crappy so I will be painting them black in the spring. Just my $.02 though.

Straight from the factory

I want them to look just as the day they were new, which would be silver

Could always take them off the car, get them powder coated and have them rebuilt.

I don't get why silver would be any harder than any other color if high heat paint and clear were used.

Rodimus if you really want them to look like new. Use some brake clean a whire wheel and then clear over it.
