Four Cylinder Ponycars. Has the time come?
Saturday, April 10, 2010 5:41 PM
With current engine power reaching insane levels (5 to 6 liter v8s making 400 to 500hp, and V6s being 300hp machines) would any of you think of getting a 250hp four cylinder turbo?

The reason I ask is that in the 80's and even 90's the ponycar V8s were making 230hp so this is hardly underpowered even if modern cars are a bit heavier. Not to mention the better fuel economy and the fact that the manufacturers could probably sell a lot more and help make them profitable for them and available for us.

I dunno, as daily drivers these cars would rock, get good mileage and be a lot more fun than a freakin' Focus or Cobalt.

I've always thought it was rather pathetic that alot of 4 cylinders are making to same power V8s were, and even today, some that still do. EVOs and STi's making 300hp when some of the newer V8s barely make more than that. albeit, forced induction is the reason, but still...

its called evolution and technology
Technology tends to make everything more powerful and smaller
look at computers
car engines
phones
tvs
its how its all evolved

No.

Nope. Same issue as my truck has, a bigger engine would probably be better for real world fuel economy. Sure the 4.3 does alright and made as much power as some V8s of its day, but a 5.7 would have been a hell of a lot better. To small of an engine for a given vehicle is a bad idea. Give me an engine that doesnt always have to be pushed just to get into traffic.

spoken like a true v8 jerk off. thanks for living up to the stereotype.

sure v8's are fun and any redneck can make one fast, but to dis-count a 4 cylinder's ability now days is just plain stupid.

bigger is not always better.

I am not discounting any four cylinder car you turd

And have you put your little four banger into the 10s yet? on all motor??? While being able to daily drive it and take 1000+ mile road trips with it? I didn't think so

And you are an idiot to say bigger is not better, you are very ignorant

And remember I still have my SunFire with more parts not installed than your POS is worth

You wanna poke at me zyaa? I'm sorry your life sucks and you can't afford anything more than a outdated lousy V6

Enjoy Brad, you are still an ignorant person

wow.. congrats. you read my registry. problem is... you think taking pot shots at me by readings some on-line mod list is going to some how upset me? think again.

i could have afforded something better than my 32mpg best daily driver ive ever owned car that lasts and lasts and lasts but unfortunately for that dream MY FAMILY was more important to me than making a $400+ payment so @!#$ off with you're assumptions.

and please, enlighten us as to how this statement...

Can you drive that four cylinder 9 second car on the road? Nope

And my best daily driver gets much better than your 32 mpg

And as said, the 4 cylinder cars out making reasonable power are kids cars; STi, Evo, Cobalt SS, Neon SRT-4....etc.

As far as getting something for your family? That's why I bought my TBSS

yes and the corvette is normally the mid life crisis car for guys trying to be kids so whats you're point?

and i would love to get a TBSS. it definitely would make a good family car.

LOL at midlife crisis car, come live where I do

A lot of my 20s friends own a C5 or C6, sorry to burst your bubble. Maybe you should get out of Iowa sometime. Or I'll drop by when I'm there in a few months and show you what my midlife crisis car is capable of.

Anyway, back on topic, four cylinder cars will NEVER be at Pony Car status.....that was my point......even though your judgement was clouded because I own what I do and wanted to lash at me for whatever reason

Soooo then you cant afford it....if you had to chose then you could afford it. Not all of us have to go into debt to buy a 50k dollar car...

Going off topic here because cry babies seemed to have done so, quite well already.... You are going to Iowa? If you get close enough and get some free time, let me know and come by Omaha! Would love to check the car out in person and hang out

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

no, you pretty much discounted 4-cylinders with that ignorant remark. you find me some kid, aside from a trust fund baby, who can afford an Evo or an STi

"there's no replacement for displacement - except technology"

and I know plenty of 10-sec 4-cylinder cars who get driven daily, so you really need to come off this V8 high-horse you're on, and quite trying to come off like a douche bag with a fat wallet, cause no one cares

you can get AV gas at your local airport......]:->

look at the power to liter ratios.... smaller engines are better(more efficient).... especially 2 stroke, and turbo'd 4 bangers.

Here is one from buschur racing. . full interior on pump gas.
I always find it funny that it seems the worth of a car on here, to some people, is measured in quarter miles and nothing else. Not how well balanced a car is not how fast it can corner. Either way i hope that we see boosted 4 cylinder pony cars. maybe it would force the manufacturers to put these cars on a diet both financially and weight wise.
