Looking to buy a new(er) car - Need opinions
Sunday, April 11, 2010 7:43 PM
I finally got a full-time job in the IT field, so now I'm looking for a nice daily driver. I'm looking for something in the $15K - $22K range.
This is what is important:
-Sedan
-Manual Transmission
-Factory warranty
-Decent power
-Fairly sporty

I've seriously considered a 2006-2008 Saab 9-3 Aero. My only concern is it looks like there is little to no aftermarket support. I like the Pontiac G8, but only the GXP comes in a 5 speed, and that's more than I want to spend. This isn't going to be a car that I am going to dump loads of money into for performance. But a few things here and there to make it somewhat different and fun would be nice.

So with that, what do you guys suggest?

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX Limited
1999 Cavalier Z24 Supercharged
1999 Grand AM SE (Beater Car)
1997 GMC Sierra
2007 Honda CBR 600RR
2005 Honda TRX450R

Mazdaspeed 6 all day. I have driven a lightly modded one, and liked it.

SAAB 9-3! The 2.8T is supported by HPTuners. Not a huge aftermarket but some nice products here. Go drive one, you'll love it, I'm thinking about upgrading to a 2008 myself.

I don't think I would ever buy a WRX. They seem to be great cars, but everyone and their grandma seem to have one and the majority of them around here are punks. I can't see myself ever driving one.

I thought about a Cobalt, but I'm not a fan of the interior. Just seems cheap. I want something more luxury. Not to mention, I can't stand the @!#$ty view out the back window. The rear of the car is just too high for me.

I like the idea of the Legacy. My friend has a Legacy GT which is a beautiful car and everything is very refined. I will have to look into that.

A G35 is also a possibility. I don't mind how they look. I've never driven or ridden in one before though. I may have to swing by a dealership and take one for a drive.

I never even thought about a Mazdaspeed. I may have to travel a ways to check out one of those. The Mazda dealership here is pretty crappy.

Still seriously considering a Saab 9-3 Aero yet.

Thanks guys for all of the suggestions so far. Keep them coming! Also, if anyone has any personal experience/opinions with any of these cars, please let me know. Anything would be helpful.

x2 for Legacy You can score a GT in your price range & that'll get you the adult version of a WRX!

i was looking at getting a subaru myself but i have seen way to many problems with the ones my friends and family have so that turned me away, my bro has a 06 sti and the motor blew at 43k , my friend has a 09 legacy and the sub is broken the weather strip around the door is broken and something is rattling under the car and she only has 19k on it. i like the saab 93 aero alot i would get that.

it's hard to beat any of the saabs, they're great cars.

while it's not exactly what you're looking for, i borrowed my mom's new malibu this weekend, and it's a very nice car!

I think this is what I settled on. I really had my heart set on a Saab, but after reading a few hundred reviews, a number of maintenance issues have scared me away. I found a red 2006 mazdaspeed6 in mint condition with only 34K on it for just under $16,000. I think that is going to be the winner.

Oh yes, fine choice indeed. Great car for the money, and it just seems more mature than an EVO or WRX.

That's exactly what I was after. An EVO and WRX are cool, but everyone around here that drives them are a bunch of young punks. Maybe it's a stereotype, but it just turns me off. This car just seems more mature as you said. Just have to check with the insurance company and see how bad they want to rip me off.

It's a shame there aren't more domestic alternatives in this segment and price range with a manual gearbox. I've always bemoaned the lack of a stick in so many of them.

Mazda 6 is a great choice, I've always enjoyed their look, more character and sportiness than other similar Japanese midsize sedan offerings from Honda, Nissan and Toyota.

^^Agreed. I really wanted to buy a domestic in the worst way. But lack of manual and cheap interiors ruined it for me.
