Yes, it's another... what car should I buy?
Saturday, May 08, 2010 9:49 AM
Hey everyone, hope you're not sick of these yet...

I just graduated college and somehow found a job in my hometown, so I am making money. I'm living at home for a while in order to save a bit of money. I'm still driving my 98 Cavalier, but frankly, I can't stand it anymore and the rust is getting bad.

So, what car should I buy?

The requirements: I want to pay cash, so my budget is roughly $6000. It *has* to be a manual and be somewhat fun to drive. To help guide you guys, I've been thinking of VW GTI, Honda Civic Si, Mustang GT, etc. Something sporty but somewhat practical. And decently reliable, too—I don't mind working on cars, but don't want to have to deal with broken ish every weekend.

Thoughts?

If $6000 is your budget, then you need to keep saving. Unless you want something with hellacious miles on it already.

I'd choose the VW GTi if I had an electro-mechanical degree.

I'd choose the Mustang if I was good in mechanics and body work.

I'd choose the Civic Si for fun and reliability.

i agree with this. honestly something nice and dependable seems to run at the 10k. especially if you expect it to be reliable. my vote was something in the subaru line. gas milage is a little lower than listed above car but awd is beyond worth it for winter or fun. really doesn't have to be turboed either. i love my 2.5 impreza obs. and i only spent 4k on it.

Just suffer with cav a liitle longer. Let's say you can save $250 a month. If you drive the cav for another year, your budget will be $9,000. That'll get you a lot more car for the money. Shoot, I know you said you didn't want a car payment, but after a year, you'd have nearly 50% down on a new V6 camaro or mustang. If you really cannot live with your cav another minute, then you'll have to look for an older late 90's car....probably still with higher miles.

If $6000 is all you can afford. Forget a car. You are still living with your parents, save your money for a down payment on a house.

I agree, keep the rust bucket (mine is turning into one too), but if it's still running well, save save save, and buy a house. or both!! (depending on how much you're making a week). And don't follow your friends and what they drive. Do whats BEST and smart in the long run. Are they still offering that $8,000 tax to first time home buyers? Or was that only for last year? Anyway, saving is your best friend. lol. Unless your parents want you out, it only makes sense to save for a house payment. Your car is kinda like "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Unless you can afford it. But only $6,000 like they say...yea, you'll prob get something that's bound to get rust in a year or so anyway.

Nobody should justify vehicle purchases with me, ever! LOL!

We don't get rid of any, we keep adding to - most recently, '07 Avalanche LTZ. =]

Anyways, in this area of the woods, you can get some nice Civics and what not around the 4-5000 range - but I think I agree with a few posters up above me, factor in age, wage, and DO YOU REALLY NEED A NEW CAR - (I put in caps for only a tad bit of emphasis), and maybe save some change, buy a house, then buy a car? I hate driving my husband's Oldsmobile, but I wouldn't get rid of it, just keep driving it until we get something else new! Hehe.

Cars have souls... I swear...
