My friend has a VW Corrado that has been giving major issues since yesterday. Cylinder 1 and 3 coilpacks blew apart, he replaced them....went through 6 in just those two cylinders within minutes and a fuse in the fuse block keeps blowing. He also had smoke coming through the dashboard, has no idea what could be causing this. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
I guess I should mention its a 1990 Corrado with a 1999 VW Passat 1.8T engine swap
major short somewhere if the dash has smoke comin from it
late 90's VW 1.8T with odd, nonsensical electrical problems? YOU DON'T SAY!
Old ass VW with a motor swap with quirks? YA DON'T SAY!
Old ass VW with a slightly later model, lower reliability motor, with all these said problems? WELL I'LL BE DAMNED!
On the other hand....you have other fingers.
Liquor is not a drug John, liquor is not a drug.
'99 huh? couldnt have possibly picked a crappier yr to use
the rule of thumb with Volkswagen is to stay away from the first 2 or 3 yrs of a new generation, in this case you'll wanna stay away from '99-'o2. if you got smoke, you got a short and/or a cut in a wire and its arcing. my first Ecotec swap did the same thing.. the culprit was a bad wire scrapping the dashframe
at least he has good taste in his VWs

Funny, my 1992 Jetta did the same damn thing!!! I threw in a 1996 VR6 in it and it kept doing that. lol
I fixed easily the problem by removing my Recaro seats and BBS wheels and sent the car at the junkyard. I was so sick of my VW's.

All wiring should be pulled out and inspected all the way to the pcm and fuse box, and use a multimeter to test voltage or continuity of the circuit rather than coil packs, thats expensive
