'89 Jeep Cherokee update

I want to thank all who responded to my earlier post. I checked out the Jeep more closely and this is what i know...

1989 Jeep Cherokee... either base or Pioneer... not 100% sure
4.0L AMC 242 straight 6 with about 198k, head gasket recently done, hasnt had an oil change in 5k+... I know these are tough engines, but I am still concerned. The owner is my best friends father, who in his very elderly fashion, believes oil changes arent necessary. the positive is that he seldom drives over 40 and only used it for short trips.
Tranny shifts alright, no hesitation
4x4 still works, going to take the advice from my earlier post and double check the rear diff
Will need a new heater core... and from my research, it looks like it'll be a huge pain in the ass
Rust in the rear from boat hauling into sea water... rear springs are iffy, trailer hitch has pretty much disintegrated
Needs a catback exhaust. LOUD AS HELL

Other than that, the body is still solid, and for $300 im definitely interested. I just need it as a spare vehicle, and Im looking to keep my costs as low as possible. I plan on doing a tune up and the heater core ASAP... Ill wait on the exhaust for a bit until i can get a little more $$$. I'll post pics if and when I pick it up.

what type of oil/filter should i use in a vehicle this old? I'd be willing to bet its pretty gunky on the inside, was thinking of running synth blend for a while to clean it up. Any thoughts?

Also, is my friends father the only person on earth who believes oil changes are scams perpetrated by big oil? Give him a break, hes 80 years old but used to work on old school porshe 911s like it was his job.

Run some sea-foam through it.

Stick with 10w30 and a Fram Extra Gaurd filter. Also, use "high milage" oil, that is, oil designed for higher milage engines.

$300 is way too cheap to pass up for a running, driving 4wd vehicle. i'd snatch it up in an instant.

how bad is the rust on the rear?

All the rust seems to be on the body, very little on the frame itself. Paints coming off, some window seals are weather rotted. overall a 3.5/10 I'd say... Just not looking forward to doing the heater core...

Its really not that bad. I used to have an '84 with the tow package, but with the 2.5 carburated 4 banger, four on the floor, and 4X4. This was back when I was still in high school. Bought the thing off my Auto Tech teacher for $1200!

XJ's are unibodies, they don't have true frames.
