Hyundai Motor America took the wraps off its edgy 2012 Veloster this afternoon at the North American International Auto Show.
The front-wheel-drive sporty hatchback has a unique three-door configuration and combines sportiness with efficiency. It is powered by direct-injection 1.6-liter Gamma inline-four cylinder engine, developing 138 hp at 6300 rpm and 123 lb-ft (166 Nm) of torque 4850 rpm. The model also promises to deliver highway fuel economy of 40 mpg (5.88 l/100km), thanks in part to its low weight of 2,584 pounds (1172 kg). Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed dual clutch.
"Gasoline-direct-injection technology allowed Hyundai engineers to create an engine that is powerful, fuel-efficient, and has fewer emissions. Despite its small size, it generates some big numbers, with both impressive horsepower output and up to 40 mpg US on the highway," said Hyundai American Technical Center Inc. powertrain director, John Juriga, at the launch of the car.
The new Gamma engine also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating.
The Veloster also comes packed with gadgets and new technology . Like Hyundai’s new Blue Link telematics connectivity system, just unveiled last week at the Computer Electronics Show. The list of tech features includes a seven-inch touch-screen display, video playback, integrated Pandora Internet radio system, Gracenote music display and Bluetooth.
The recently announced communication system, Blue Link, will be available on every Veloster model as well as all 2012 Sonatas.
The Veloster first appeared on the auto show circuit as a concept car in 2007 at the Seoul Motor Show, designed at Hyundai’s Korean design center in Namyang. Hyundai’s South Korean parent said Veloster, code named HND-3, was designed to cater to the tastes of the Generation Y, so the vehicle aims to take on Toyota’s Scion line.
Veloster also made it to other auto shows as a concept, including Los Angeles in 2007 and last year in Paris.
The Veloster has cool headlamps with LED running lights and appealing air intakes. It also has an akward-looking door configuration. In addition to the three passenger doors, the liftgate opens into the skylight, giving a bigger entry through the rear.
The Veloster goes on sale in the U.S. this summer and will be positioned under the Genesis coupe in Hyundai’s lineup. Basically replacing the now defunct Tiburon as the entry level sports car.

Ugly as all hell, but impressive for Hyundai. If it didn't have the stupid 3 door setup I would be interested.
Currently #4 in Ecotec Forced Induction horsepower ratings. 505.8 WHP 414WTQ!!!
Currently 3rd quickest Ecotec on the .org - 10.949 @ 131.50 MPH!!!
why not go ahead and add the other suicide door. it would make it just a little more practical.

Nope, gotta admit that this is the first new car in the past two years of their new designs that I don't like. They should've shelved this one (and the Tiburon line) altogether.

I'd usually hate something of this design, but I don't hate this. I like the color on the wheels. Also like the suicide door, BUT it would make way more sense on the driver's side so you don't have to walk to the other side to get things out of the back seat easier. It would also make more sense on the driver's side for back seat passengers to get out easier, usually the passenger's side door slides up & the driver's seat doesn't, but I guess the rear passengers can slide across & get out the passenger's side. Looks like it would be very difficult to see out of the back, the window is very small & there's a big body chunk above the lights/behind the rear side window.
sorry the Genesis Coupe is the tiburon replacement the tib was hyundai's ONLY sport compact and currently the genesis coupe is hyundai's ONLY sport compact, so i do disagree that the veolster is "the tiburon replacement". The coupe also shares the tib's body lines and body design. the only thing that the veloster and the tib share is that its front wheel drive.
Ive been watching this car since hyundai announced the sonata hybrid. I have a feeling the Nuvis is next to come out after this one...

Since when was the GC a sport compact? There's nothing compact about the size, power, and design of the car. The GC is in no way related to the Tiburon. If you want to talk about sharing lines and design, then you might as well call the Sunfire and Firebird related, and more than just the triangle in the front.

I would call the GC more of a Tib replacement than this thing posted here.
FU Tuning
The front reminds me of the Hyundai Sonata hybrid...which I still don't like. The 3 door set up is odd, hopefully when the mid model year refresh they'll either add a fourth door or drop the 3rd one. The rear is okay and the interior is good. Would make a great city commuter if I was in the market for one.
godddddammmnnnnn thats ugly
If striving for ugly 1st prize THEY WIN.
The biggest plus of this car is the curb weight. Nice work there; all cars in this class should weigh 2500lbs or LESS
I can live with the front, but the profile and rear kill it for me.
^^LOL! Good one

I believe this is a concession to safety during rear seat loading in parallel parking situations, where we would not want the 3rd door to open into traffic, but instead to the curb.
If there is a Japanese or UK RHD version of the car, I would not be surprised if the suicide 3rd door is actually on the left side of the car; same deal, but mirror image.

Sorry you are wrong.
The Veloster takes the Tibs old product slot. Sporty FWD, 2+2 sports coupe.
The GC actually was not supposed to be a Hyundai at all. It was part of a planned upscale brand called Genesis. That would have included the sedan, coupe, and the new Equus. Actually probably many don't know this but these 3 cars are only known as Genesis in the Korean and Chinese markets...not Hyundai. Hyundai was not sure people would trust a new brand in NA from Hyundai since they have a stronger brand name in "Hyundai" in NA markets they just rebadged all Genesis vehicles here as Hyundai.
So to correct you Mystic. The GC is NOT the Tiburon replacement, but very clearly a completely new car and class for Hyundai. The Veloster IS the the Tiburon replacement, all press releases are saying this including the one sheet show brochure i picked up at the NAIAS today. ..."An affordable, FWD, 2+2 sports coupe in the tradition of Hyundais Tiburon"...

Yeah and that Genesis badge i attached in the picture is the badge a ton of GC guys are putting on their cars. They are removing the Hyundai "H" badges and putting the proper "Genesis" wings on the car. There is an entire aftermarket just for those badges.
