My Formula SAE car
Monday, May 16, 2011 5:14 PM
We just got done with competition at Michigan International Speedway, and I'm really proud of the car this year, so I decided to post some pictures. A few things to note:
Custom Turbocharged KTM 525 making 70 bhp (restricted to 19mm on inlet).
Frame is one-off, hand cut, bent, notched and welded by students.
Suspension designed, built, and tuned by me including one-off a-arms and bellcranks.
Custom designed and manufactured billet aluminum uprights.
Custom designed and manufactured brake rotors (floating on front).
Student-built computer linked to ECU to allow for on-the-fly tuning from anywhere in the world.
Hand laid-up body.

Everything on this car is designed and manufactured by students except for the obvious (whole engine, brake master cylinders and calipers, dampers, differential, hubs, etc.)

I was going to do Formula SAE, but backed out after finding out it was a full year commitment. I kind of wish I had done it, but there were more useful classes (to an EE) that I took instead.

Anyways, looks good man...but I thought you were restricted to Normal Aspiration.

I have no signiture

Yup, I should've joined but didn't. Gonna be another one of those "should've's" in life.

nope. the only real restrictions on the engine side are 600cc's or less and 19 or 20mm restrictor on the inlet depending on the fuel. this was our first year of turbocharging the KTM, and it worked exceptionally well.

oooo carbon fiber push rods. I thought carbon hated compressive loading. We had a carbon fiber over rapid prototype abs intake manifold and I laid the carbon for most of it. I'm sure you remember my car. It was the one with the solid rear axle, spool, cvt, barrel throttle body, and air shocks. Yes all the best idea ever in 1 car.

You used the same front dampers as us. And I think I remember seeing that exhaust, you werent the only turbo team with 2 pipes coming out the the turbine housing. Still dont know the reasoning for that.

they have absolutely no problems with the ~200 lbs of load they see. i remember your car, it was the 55 car, right? i only remember because of the solid axle. it looked super loose in autox and endurance. how'd you guys end up?

We ended up 69th. First time in 7 years we actually did all events. But thats cause our car was only getting 1/4 throttle on friday, yay 6 second acceleration runs.

I remember seeing you guys at competition this year. I was there as a powertrain design judge. The formula days are good times, I was in Formula for 5 years and you'll definately miss it when youre all done school, well maybe not the sleepless nights, haha. Its a very nice looking car, congrats!

The big national competition is scheduled in Lincoln next year isn't it? I know there was alot of talks from the SAE wigs about moving it to Lincoln. I know that's where the SCCA Solo Nationals are already held and it is a SEA of concrete. Something like 80 acres of concrete with only a few grates and no poles/curbs

The Cali comp is moving there. Michigan is staying where it is.
