Running MegaSquirt, Do you need a ECU?
Wednesday, February 13, 2008 11:41 PM
I dont know where to put this so i guess it'll go here. What im doing is im swapping the 2200 3pd. auto in my sunfire for a fully built and turbo'd 2.4 w/ a getrag 5spd with Megasquirt. Now my question is, In the 2000-up j-bodys the engine is controled by the ECU and the other sutff ( gauges, wipers, lights, that crap) is controled by the BCM, correct? SO if i use Megasquirt for fuel and spark controll and everything else to run the motor, i would not need the ECU out of a 00-up donor car, correct? I know im gonna have to swap all the wiring over for the engine and interior.

The BCM gets its data from the ECU, so if you want factory gauges, you can't fully get rid of the ECU.

at first i was goin to switch everything from the 98 wiring to the 00-up becuase 1. im goin from a 2200 3spd. to the 2.4 5 spd. 2. I wasn't goin to run a EGR and i wanted the 00-up cavi cluster, 3. i heard that on the pre 2000 ecus it was hard to tune for over 15psi and i want to run atleast 15-20 psi. But now that i want to run a MS setup im tring to figure out what wiring i need to switch and what i can just repin and just switch or keep.

Just leave the 98 bull-ish in, let it control the fan ,speedo, idle ,whatever else and just stab the CEL with
a screw driver.

upgrading the electrical is a bit more complex than a re-pin.

thats me utilizing my sarcasm btw.

stick with what you got. much easier.

I run a Megasquirt in my car.

Best advice is to leave as much wiring in tact as you can. And then cut and splice into your engine harness wherever you need to and put the Megasquirt in. You can run the car without the factory PCM, but you won't have stuff like a speedometer, ABS, or daytime running lights that turn off even with the key out and the car in park.

Looking at your profile, you're running a 98. There's no sense in swapping the engine harness from an 00+ car then going and running MS.

well i have to swap the harness anyways becuase im goin from a 2200 to a 2.4. but i see what ur talkin about if i run MS i just need to hook the MS up the harness and then run that. So with MS does anything from the stock computer connect to the engine?

Nothing that pertains to it running.

Currently I need to add a 3 wire CTS to mine. Reason is that a 2 wire sensor cannot run both ECU's at the same time. If I hook the wire up for the stock PCM, I get a correct gauge reading, but the MS says that the coolant temp never goes over about 96 degrees. Which leaves it in warmup mode all the time. The other would be a wire for the tach signal. I don't have that hooked up yet, and I'm waiting for some warmer weather to go out and try hooking it up. A tach will constantly read 0 for me but i'm going to tap the wire anyways. I hoping that since it reads from the pulses rather than a varying volatage that it'll work properly. BUT, that's just a guess I haven't gotten out and actually tried it.
