if you have hptuners compare the cavalier 2.2 vs the s-10 2.2 tunes. the s-10 timing is set at well over 10 degrees more advance in places than the cavalier even at wot. as far as i know the s-10 and cavalier motor are the same part for part except for the intake and exhaust portions. if the s-10 runs just fine with that much more advance then why shouldnt we be able to. i own an s-10 that was purchased new and now has 131,000 and ive never had any problems. im gonna experiment with the cavy, but anybody that has hpt and a 2.2 should compare and see for themselves cause the difference is amazing.
"...and then God said let the 2.2's have potential. Thats when hell broke loose..."
ok so what do i need to do ?? do i just change out the ecm ??
i have a 2.2 simi stock cavy and hpt
i will try it and tell u what happens
The advanced timing has to do with different parts, that motor is geared up differently.
You should be ok with 10 degrees provided you have enough fuel. Stock injectors might not provide enough. Check out the ODB1 project.
BTW the S-10 has a different mask than the cavalier, so if you flash a cavi ecu it prolly wont work. Also i don't think its plug and play for ecu swap but you can try, let us know how it goes.
Don't just look at main spark tables. Make sure you're taking all spark modifiers into account, too. S10 uses a different cam also, designed for more low end torque. Watch to see if EGR is enabled in the cells where you see more timing. Look at any tables or constants related to knock retard to see if GM is more conservative if timing is too advanced for fuel or other conditions. If exhaust flow is poorer, the engine may need more spark advance to get proper levels of power.
Lots of things to consider imo.
