so i was trying to check my codes today with my scaner and the damn thing won't read my car? (97 2.2l pacesetter header 2.5 exshaust ) tried the scanner on my gf sunfire same motor no extras and it read just fine? tried again on mine and it won't even power the scanner? any ideas?
make sure that your cig lighter fuse is good. Im pretty sure that is the one that feeds the power to the diag. port. I think there are 2 powers one keyed and another constant. The cig lighter is the constant, and I think the other is the from the ecm. If your getting power and ground in the port then your ecm may be bad.

well my car runs and drives just fine so pretty sure its not the ecm, but i will check the cig lighter fuse on my next break at work
I have seen ecm's turn on the mil and function properly until you want to connect to the ecm with a scanner, in which case you cannot communicate. Now in this case your scanner works fine until you try to establish communication with the ecm, and it fails. This has only happened to me on a couple of occasions though. Most of the time what your describing is caused someone installing a radio and shorted the memory power wire , which is the cig lighter power. Or messing around with an electronics Item powered by the cig lighter.

well actully i did install a cd play and my cig plug doesn't work as well do you have a wiring diagram for the power wire and cig plug? if so could you email it to me hendrickc7@yahoo.com

ok need to bring this back....
checked this out yesterday and the fuse to the cig ligher is good, all wiring looks right ...
but the computer reader under the dash and the cig lighter doesn't work.
what I have done that might have caused it was switch the dash peice from around radio but no wires had to be cut or changed for that.
I also removed the stock steering wheel and replaced it with a momo steering wheel in which i had to remove the air back?
I needed to do my emissons like yesterday so any advised is much thanked

updates in trouble shooting :
Removed computer from car left out for a while. placed back in car, check engine light came off, (but came back on after some driving) and the computer reader (or what ever you call it) still isn't being read, so i check the scanner again and it works just fine, ran down to autozone tried there scanners no good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jumper a known power wire (from the battery, if you have to) to the orange wire in the service port. That will get you power, and the scanner should work.
You obviously have a power supply problem to the cigarette/service port wiring. You're going to have to track it down somehow.... make sure that fuse is good, with a multimeter... or swap it with another. Just because it looks good doesn't mean it is.
