trifecta now does j-body tunes what do you think?
Friday, June 05, 2009 12:40 PM
this is the response from a question i emailed to them today,

"Yes, that’s correct – we would send you a “base” tune, then have you generate a datalog by driving your car around with the programmer hooked up. You can email us the data back, we’ll analyze it, and make any required tune changes."

sounds like they make a tune based on what you have and then do actual dataloging, and make more changes based on that:

opinions....

It is mail order, so it sucks.

completly worthless or just not as good as hpt?

they do dataloging also, maybe it sucks compared to hpt... but if i can get even 5 hp out of it then its worth it cause my exhaust system is way more than that and I probably only got 5 from it... I have heard some good things about ithem from ecotecforum.com

but I asked for opinions and you gave one so thanks.

How is it mail order? lol, It would be the exact same thing if you went somewhere to get dyno'ed. You run the car and make changes afterwards.

not a bad idea if you ask me..

dont see how its bad to have a professional tweak your tune based on things YOUR car is actually doing.

1.No it is not.
2. If you have a wideband and have a datalogging program that will pull a wideband in as well as other things then it would be the same as street tuning. No where did the OP mention that. If the datalogger is not getting AFR's then they are guessing, and it is no where near as good as street tuning.

^^^ true but this is better than changing things by guessing at it. by having a professional do the work it means that the average person can get a good tune and not have to worry about it.

granted hpt is easier than pie to USE, its the understanding of how things work that confuses people.

NO it wouldn't because a STREET tune is not a DYNO tune. Not to mention is their box logging PYRO and WBO2?? NO!

If they tune it remotely real-time on the dyno, then that is a different story. If you want to find a "tuner" to tell you your car is "tuned" so you can add it to your mod list, go to CobaltSS.net

Welp if their is no wideband you're getting info from it'll be useless and all they could possible change is timing and other basic random crap.

But if it does have an input for a wideband signal, I can see this helping people who don't want to mess with the programming.

here's my email conversation:

want to know if you do tunes for the j-bodys yet, I have a 2003 sunfire with
intake, full exhaust, pulleys, that i would like to get a tune for.

thanks

will

Yes, we do offer tuning on the J-body cars now! The price is $250 +
shipping.

awesome how exactly does it work, i heard you sent something down that i could get data from my car with then i send it back and you write a program or something like that. let me know thanks!

does the programmer have a wideband o2 sensor so you can tune for AFR? what kind of information are you able to change with the data loging you get? thanks

will

The programmer does not have a wideband but we can tell from other pieces of data if the fuel ratio is off, or not. We usually optimize timing and fuel curves once we see the data because different areas have different fuel quality, etc.

lol. it's pretty clear why they are getting some unhappy people with them on css.net.

Its very clear.... All he is doing is looking at fuel trims. While the driveability can be mostly taken care of by using fuel trim data, PE can not. Therefore it is a hack....

I wish I knew enough about tuning that someone could explain to me how to optimize spark timing and especially "fuel curves" by looking at knock retard and fuel trims alone. Key word here being "optimize" That can only be done where you are actually gauging the differences (i.e. on a Dyno) Bumping up spark advance until you get KR is not "optimizing" unless it actually nets you a gain over what you might have with less fuel and timing. This is why I don't consider any of this crap as being "tuned."

Yeah, there are quite a few "tuners" ( I say that term very loosely) that have nutswingers... I have gotten into it with a particular "tuner" over there who has admitted to not even use WB on LSJ's and all his tunes are "spot on".... Come to find out, he only tunes MAF and leaves the VE alone... Claims to "disable" the VE but can't answer what happens if the MAF fails.... The thing that kills me about CSS.net is it doesn't seem to be about how safe the tune is, its about the most HP.. Hell, anybody can make stupid amounts of HP on any engine... Doesn't mean its going to last long.... Just because you bought HPT does not mean you are a "tuner"....

Epic Nutswinging is all it can be described as. That along with the gross amount of bad information in the community and lack of senior knowledge bases like we have here; (PJ, ImPhat, Promotec, etc) = lots of LSJ owners complaining about how bad their motor is when it leans out and goes BOOM as this trend has greatly increased over the past year.

I am going to generalize here but the main difference between a majority of boosted drivers here vs .net is that here in order to even get a boosted J body to idle the owner has to have some minimum understanding of EFI. On .net the extent of knowledge a majority of people have is using a screw driver to bolt on an intake or pulley swap.
Hell a lot of them pay the dealer to do that! So it doesn't surprise me people are willing to fork out 250 dollars just to have someone tell them their cars faster.

a jbody pcm and a cobalt pcm are two different worlds. They may be able to get away with some slight guessing work due to the cobalts using a maf, but with tps or strictly map......have fun with that. two words BANG BOOM!

5-10 hp doesnt have to be top end... if i gain 5-10 in certain parts of the powerband it would be worth it to me, just want to optomize what i have

I'm not being sarcastic... Totally serious... Sometimes people "dream" and don't think realistic then are upset or disappointed with their net gains....
