I plan on running my race car completely with Megasquirt. (no factory ecu at all) My question is what should I look for in a new laptop?
I will be getting on pretty much to run this, I can't find a new one w/ a serial port so I'm stuck w/ the usb converter. What operating system do you recommend? Will i need a cd drive? I plan on taking this to the track (dirt track) to make adjustments as needed. So if anyone has any Ideas or suggestions on this I greatly appreciate it!
Thanks Chris
I think id like to get one of those netbook mini laptops for my next MS dedicated machine. other than physical size, usb ports only is fine. the USB converters work just fine, but it is one extra thing you do have to buy. I use XP just fine, but i believe ME can be used as well. I dont know if anyone has tried Vista yet, so i cant say whether it does or does not, but i know that MS sites recommend XP and earlier. Vista and 7 may not be compatable. I'd hate to spend all that money and then find out they wont work together.

I run mine on vista, so it does work.
As far as a computer goes, you dont need anything fast or expensive. A friend of mine has one from the 90's (very slow/basic
) that he uses- that way he can leave it in the trunk in case he ever needs it, and not worry cause it was next to free.

Now with northstar V8, IRS, 20's n 22's
I was using a laptop with a 333 Celeron and Windows ME on it because, like you mentioned, it had a serial port. However it recently died on me at the track when I went to turn it on and make a few adjustments. So now I'm onto my new laptop and I haven't tried it out yet with the USB/Serial converter.

Tater, I was looking at those and someone told me that as soon as you put anything on them to run they get real slow? I don't know that though. I've been looking on Dell financial services at lease turn in laptops w/ 10" screens, dual core processors and like 80 gig? For $320 w/ windows xp pro. I think they were Latitude 420's ? This looks about what I'm looking to get.
If someone thinks this is not the way to go please say so. Yea they come w/ a 100 day warranty as well.
Thanks guys
