HP Tuners or Elec. Tec 3
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 8:38 AM
hey whats up guys... I havent been on here in a while. I have a tec 3 kit I never installed (long story)

I need some important opinions. You guys have always been there when i have a question.

So im not sure what to do. I hear HPTuners is a great system and easy to use.
But I still have this TEC3 kit.

Should I just wire up the TEC3 or sell if off for an HPTuners kit ??

Last thing, If i should keep the TEC3, is there anyone on this forum that has experience with installs and Tuning ??

Thanks in advance

Andrew

HPTuners is great, but is limited for our cars.

What are your plans for your car?

I have a cast log style manifold a T3/T04E dual ball bearing turbonectics turbo, built internals, front mount, koni yellows, random sway bars bars and struts bars
and hope to run 10 PSI to start but want to push closer to 13-15 PSI after properly tuned....

I have also been debating if I should sell that stuff too... but i dont think ill get my money out of it so...
the other choice was get a cheap supercharger add a smaller pulley get HPTuners and sell all other @!#$ and have a fun car
nothing fast but something fun

What do you think?

Personal "UPinION" warning...

Look what Brandon Fetter was able to do with HPTuners.

Not knocking the Tec in anyway,I'm loving it. But unless your going to run it as a complete standalone (not as a piggyback) I don't think it's worth the effort...

i had an idea that i wanted to run both if i could...

I was going to use the old harness and actually remove all the wire director from the bulkhead connector and eliminate them entirely.
the ones that I want to stay using like, Fuel guage, speedo tach and coolant guage i would leave in there so i could see my normal setup

then i have an old harness i was going to cut and splice to the proper lengths and install the ECU unit in the airbag spot for the passenger and cut a hold in the firewall....

but its a lot of work so im not sure

kind of like they would both run independently because i would have anyhting that would be firing injectors or spark plugs since those wires were removed

and the ones from the tec3 would be used only

I will still use the TEC i just need some opinions and know how that you experienced guys have that I just dont.

i dont know anything about the tec3 but im running HP tuners, its not too bad, i was able to make a fake 2.5bar tune for the m62 w/2.9" pulley, 42# inj and 100shot of nitrous so it does the job i suppose, but like someone said, it is limited but for my application (daily driven, occasional racing) it works well enough.

12.3 quarter....That EXACTLY what im looking to hit. I like that daily driven but cant drag too....

i dont wanna use nitrous though

i think maybe i should stay with the tec and do my turbo install... 13-15 PSI from a T3/T04E .63 trim should be a good street car right?
any thoughts on Numbers?

i hit 12.8 @ 111 stock motor, 13psi on an ecotec running HPT. would work out for you to use the HPT and have some fun.

stock eco's are strong... I have a 2.4 so i had to build it up a bit. (I should have bought an ECO)

Forged Rods, Pistons bored .020 over
MLS head Gasket
Head Studs
2.3 Cams
Dropped to 9:1 compression

See the other problem is now im out of money and filing bankruptcy (lol because of the car partly)

So i have to sell the TEC3 kit which I paid 2K for. If I got even $1,000 I'd be happy
what is HPTuners anyways... $650 ?

How does HPT work anyway? what does it use?

Last I knew Fetter was looking for a Tec3. You might contact him about buying it.

The only reason I would ever choose HPT over a TEC3 is for transmission control.

places sell trannie controllers

-Trailblazer SS - not so custom 6.0L - custom intake - custom tune
- (1) 2.4L on an engine stand (1) blown trans (2) good quad trans (1) eco trans = party

Other standalone's can also do the trans at the same time too.

My point was, that's the only benefit I will legitimately accept HPT having, excluding "legal" issues... Hell I have an auto and still gave HPT the middle finger.

whalesac... so you dont like HPT.... why?
Re: HP Tuners or Elec. Tec 3

I don't dislike HPT. I've said it before, that they are single handedly the most responsible for the elevated horsepower numbers you see in J-bodies today. I remember a time when there was nothing for J-bodies except maybe piggy-backed e-manages and MSD DIS2's, and reaching 350whp would instantly put you on the most respected list. The community cried out for a real PCM tuning solution, and HPTuners answered.

I just prefer the benefits of a full standalone compared to the limits of the J-body PCM...and when I move on to another car, I don't have to worry about spending another $100 or so to unlock the PCM (and that's assuming HPT has support for that vehicle).

Just a little friendly advice, though. If you are in serious financial trouble, you are probably better off selling the TEC3 and you should really reconsider making large purchases of any sort until you can get your life back on track.

If your only running 13-15 psi I think the TEC3 is overkill, it would be much easier to just wire in the 2000-2002 style 2.4 harness with PCM and get the supercharger reflash. This will allow you do do speed density 2 bar tuning for fuel and timing. TEC3 is a much much more expensive and higher learning curve and given your fairly modest goals I don't think its truely needed. Plus pretty much anyone on here can help you with hpt questions, TEC3 thats beyond most of us.
