Any stand alone option is great. Making it work isn't the issue it's getting a valid emissions inspection in many states afterward that makes it hard. And also the fact of buying a standalone pcm that's worth more than the entire car it's going into..

Megasquirt is probably the best bang for the buck if your going standalone.
Emissions is still a issue if your in a state with that.
FU Tuning
A few of the GM concept cavaliers ran an older version of this.
Brad Wheeler has at least one of them.
I also agree, Megasquirt is the way to go.
