shiftpoints on a sunfire, tach only goes to 7k
Friday, September 08, 2006 8:36 AM
well tonight im leaving for new york to get tuned, im getting the whole shibang done to my car as far as tuning goes. my question is i wanna bump the shiftpoints up to 7k but dont i have to have a limiter set at 7200 as well and seeing as the sunfire tach only goes to 7k wouldnt it break the need or something if i had the shiftpoint set to higher than the tach reads? thanks.

The tach is only a display, it in no way limits what the ecu lets the engine rev to. I wouldn't trust the stock tach at those revs, mine has a hard time keeping up in 1st and 2nd gear as it is, so it's as good a time as any to upgrade.

Good luck this weekend, let us know how it turns out!

stock head hates high revving.... i have heard that 7200 is the highest safe rpm to go to.... but i have also heard 7000 is the highest, and also 6800... lol

so i dont know...

boosted.
you've got a stock head no? Risky, but let me know how well it holds up with some abuse!! I haven't gone past 6700 yet.

There are a number of 2.4's that are currently revving 7k+ and walking away.

Are those 2.4's stock? Or are they built with better oiling and valvetrains to withstand those extra revs?

Good point, missed that, but I know some are going to 6700+ on a stock valvetrain and oiling system.

I figured "getting the whole shibang done to my car as far as tuning goes" ment dyno tned, my bad.

i simply cannot afford to get dyno tuned around my way at all, they told me they want 175 bucks a hour and quoted me anywhere from 4-8 hours so street tuning and track tuning for now it is.

in my experience i've always preferred street tuning. No need to tune extensively on a dyno unless you are planning to have a dyno queen, in my opinion the dyno is great for certain things, getting true hp numbers and finding out your cars peak power range being the most pertinent. Hope the cars running good for ya John, let me know some track numbers once you get them

My guess is 240-250 with looking at your motor. Should have went 10:1 instead of 9:1 with the M45. I really really wouldnt trust a stock oil system 2.4 much past stock rev limiter. But with 2.3 pump swap, a few other oiling modifications, and some head work (stonger springs and bigger cams), I would trust it all day long, I would trust it over an eco at that point. Timing chain would need some adressing much past 7500 I would imagine.

remember i got that 50 shot to still hit so i should be close to 270whp, we will find out
