Vertical Doors Inc. Install pics and a few hints..

Maybe this will help answer a few questions about this particular kit...

These are the hinges before and after I painted them...

After removing the Hood , Wheel well liners , and Fenders. You will be able to see what your up against.

1st thing you'll have to deal with is this flange that holds the bracket that allows you to bolt the fender and adjust the middle of the fender. You can just beat it down flat with a hammer or you can just cut it off like I did...

After that's out of the way you can have a friend help hold the door in position while you remove the hinges from the frame and the door and put the hinge assembly in place.
Using the bolts that you removed from the hinges (you can use the new ones that come with the kit but they seem pretty weak to me). You WILL have to use the Lock nuts supplied with the kit in place of the factory ones.

On the door side of the new hinge you will have to use the top and bottom bolts on the OUTSIDE hole only for now. Once you get that tightened up you can CAREFULLY open the door While supporting the back of the door a little as you open it. Put the bolts in the top and bottom holes of the door and SNUG them up. After adjusting the Set screw in the hinge that adjusts the height of the back of the door (see instructions with the hinge kit). SLOWLY close the door to check for clearance problems with the 2 bolts you just put in. ON MY KIT I HAD TO GRIND THE HEAD OF THE BOLT ON THE TOP ABOUT 1/2 THE THICKNESS OF THE HEAD TO GET ENOUGH CLEARANCE IN ORDER TO CLOSE THE DOOR WITHOUT INTERFERENCE. i HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH VDI ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY.

After that just follow the directions in the instructions for installing the Air Strut and splicing the wiring in the door.

Now as far as this kit goes the door Opens OUT a full 45 degrees to give you about 35" from the door to the car , IF you don't want to show off the Lambo feature all the time... I get in and out just like using a regular car door 95% of the time.

It Also opens UP a full 45 degrees. Giving you about 55" from the ground to the bottom corner of the door, Depending the ride Height of your car...

It took me about 4 1/2 hrs. to do the whole thing working by myself... PLEASE get a friend or two to help.

Hope that helps a little.

I'm with 04 Black Fire, I'm still new to a lot of this, and seeing a nice detailed set of pics usually answers more questions than I knew I had about a mod. F'rinstance, I never knew that you could do lambo AND standard openings at the same time... always asked myself why anyone would want lambos when it looked like it was harder to get in and out (I'm a big guy) but thanks to you and your hard work, I just might have to add lambo doors to my wanna list.

you know i once never liked the vertical doors. but i am so ready to get up the cash and buy a set of hinges now. problem is that i have too much stuff going on right now and prolly wouldnt be able to get one for a long time. i need a sponsor. or someone to be nice enough to give me the hinges for free or really cheap. <br>

how is the s shaped piece that allows the door to open vertically secured to the c shaped piece. Theres a cylinder shaped thing that goes though the hole in the S part. Is it some sort of press fit or a bearing?

The S shaped piece that goes to door is attached to the pivot assembly with a large bearing that allows the door to swing up. Then that is all attached to the C shape on the frame with a 1/2" rod and bearing that runs from top to bottom to allow the door to swing out.

Hope that makes since.

Very nice write up Gary! They look great......I really like the way this kit swings out enough so that you can still get into the car as if they were stock.....

Not sure what's next... Some subtle graphics or ghost flames. And SOMETIME I'm going to have to get this new motor tucked in it.

i still dont understand, there is a bearing that fits into the c shape. then the s shape piece is inesrted into the bearing. i understand how that allows the door to rotate upward but what keeps it from poopping out of the bearing?
