body guys, help?!!

hey all, quick question for the body guys
I have the z3 inserts in my stock fenders, they look great but ive had to repaint them twice already cuz they tend to crack around where they are molded into, do you guys know what i can use to prevent this from happening??

Its because you mixed fiberglass with metal I'm assuming. Did you just fiberglass the inserts in or how do you have them in there? What are the inserts made out of?

There is an ad in the classifieds for full Z3 fenders for $150, I would suggest you take advantage of that, otherwise you may be doing this on a regular basis.

thats a good point, the only bad thing is when i told the shop to mold my side skirts they also molded them to the fenders which i really didnt want so im kinda stuck, i know the inserts were almost like a plastic material,

Only thing I can think of is to try SpeedGrip. It's like a structural adhesive that WILL NOT come off of anything. My old boss dropped a blob on the body shop floor, which was at the time covered with about 1/4" of dust... stuck to the floor. He almost broke his toe trying to kick it off... and it's still there to this day, about 2 years later LOL.

It can be purchased from an autobody/paint supplier usually... although it does vary from area to area. Your body shop should know how to get a hold of this stuff. It has a blue Viper with white racing stripes on the front, with a time clock I believe. AWESOME stuff. FUSOR is another one... but personally I think SpeedGrip holds up much better.

If that does't work... you'd have to go with the z3 fenders themselves.

Sounds like it might of been plastic inserts. You cant fiberglass plastic. If they did that they thats not very smart. We sell fiberglass fender inserts and when you fiberglass them in properly i've never heard of them seperating or cracking around.
well good luck

Trust me with the SpeedGrip stuff... that's the best stuff to use for your situation, besides actually getting the fenders.

(gal here by the way lol)

yeah two different materials put together will contract and expand at the same heat in different ways. Its reall dumb for a manufacturer to put em together.... *COUGH* Aluminum head, cast iron block *COUGH* LMFAO....

Heh I was just messin with ya on the "guys/gal" thing anyways

I'd be more than happy to explain how to use SpeedGrip to you... but without SEEING what the inserts look like and how they go into the fender... it's hard to explain exactly the best way to make sure they adhere.

I'd guess that there's a part of the insert or fender that overlap at least a little? I'd recommend if this is the case, the part of the insert you're going to adhere the SpeedGrip to you need to put some nice scratches in it (eh I'd guess using 80 - 120 grit), just MAKE SURE you don't scratch a visible area... or try not to... as you could just fill that in. Also, take a rough piece of sandpaper to bare metal (where you're going to put the SpeedGrip also OR if the area you're going to be gluing happens to have paint or something on it... you can just scratch that and it SHOULD hold up fine) to put some scratches in it. Granted... plastic scratches better than metal... but the scratches help the glue adhere better.

I'd recommend the 5 minute Speed Grip... it sets faster... but you still wanna leave it set overnight to be on the safe side.

Like others have said... fiberglass and metal don't really mix very well as far as using to keep things together... neither do fiberglass and urethane.

Now, successfully adhering plastic to metal... is just about as hard. Like I said, SpeedGrip will bond virtually ANYTHING to ANYTHING else... heck I wouldn't be surprised if you took two pieces of butter bread, put the glue on both butter sides and stuck them together and it held. But it's the best thing I can think of to help you out. If Speedgrip doesn't work... I'd suggest breaking down and buying the fenders. SHOULD hold up though.

It's hard to say though without seeing what you're working with... if you have any pictures of the inserts themselves, and maybe work in progress of putting them in origionally... it'd be easier to see and give you the best advice. Without seeing, that's the best I can tell ya, and I hope that helped. If you have any further questions or whatnot, feel free to shoot me an email or IM (I'm on Yahoo more than AIM anymore).

I'd highly recommend SpeedGrip over anything else though if you can get it. FUSOR is basically the same stuff too... but FUSOR hasn't held up quite as well as SpeedGrip
