I made a post in OT explaining what happened (someone hit my car at work [custom auto body shop]) and didn't say a word (know who it was... the people that are moving into the office in front of the shop).
Keep in mind, because of that little dent... the WHOLE CAR needs to be repainted because it's a custom color... I have ghost flames... yadda yadda.
I'm guessing... since it's a custom color... with the ghost flames (color can't be duplicated).. $5,000 or around there. Yeah I'm an auto body tech and painter, but I just wanted everyone else's opinions.
that sucks a big one man. i'd be fightin with the peopl that did it to pay for it
Can't you just pull the dent? That looks like it would pop right out....just a thought
You can't reach inside and hit a little? What a bout the dry Ice trick?
no... what you can't see on the pic is there's a GOUGE in the middle of the dent. Has to be ground down, stud welded, pulled out, filled in, primed, and whole car repainted
Nah dude, you definitely don't have to have the whole car repainted for something like that, even if you do have a custom color and ghost flames. I know for sure that the painter at my shop could patch that panel. The color may not be a 100% dead on match, but it never is. You'd MAYBE need to have the door and rear bumper blended, but that would be ridiculous to get the whole car painted for one panel. Once the dent is pulled, do all the other necessary body work, then take it to a good painter. If he is good, he will be able to spot the repair and just blend the rest of the panel. Then for your ghost flames, just replot the design and respray. There is a margin of error that you are just going to have to accept, but I definitely don't think you should be considering respraying the whole car.

see if your jobber has one of the color match cameras, there is a good chance they can come out and get a pretty close match. even still you should be able to as long as you can get a color close to blend that out, you will be redoing the ghost flames, but just lay down a test panel for the pearl coats so that you can get the amount of coats right. do it like you were doing a tricoat spot repair. If you have a mixing bank at your shop it will make you like alot better, but even still, its should blend out, just use test panels to get the color and amount of coats right.
I would get the paint shot with a laser and get the exact paint code for it and blend it all in. A good painter can take a paint a few shades darker or lighter and make it not even noticable. I can
All in the blending.. I say you shouldnt have to do mroe than the rear quarter repair, blend, and reclear the whole thing.
I also would talk to the people that did it. Try to get some type of payment from them.
Well I'm the one that did all the work on my car... the body work... the painting... the ghostflames... and am myself an experienced auto body tech/painter. (I always try to respond to posts in here helping people out)
Being a custom color that I mixed MYSELF... I know what work has and hasn't been done, and have a vague memory of what colors I mixed.
However... a color scanner will only come up with the closest stock color. Having been in the business for years and looking at tons of colors... there really isn't a stock color of any brand that's close enough to not notice... even if it is blended in (I'm really good at blending also). There's a lot of pearls in the color (hard to see on the pics). When the sun hits it however... the different colors of the pearls really come out.
I guess I'll have to wait and see what my boss says tomorrow.

Well, two things: One, there are color match scanners that can match your color, no matter what, but you've got to go to a very good supply house. There are some that can even nail the metamerism in the paint, as well as your pearl coat.
Two, if you can't get it matched, I'd say you're about right in the $5K range to do it right.
Also, if you do end up having the whole thing painted, make sure you write down your formula somewhere, or mix a lot more paint than you need, so that if this type thing ever happens again, you won't have to go through this. I know this doesn't help you now, but I have always made sure to mix extra paint, just incase.
I think what I'm going to do is not worry about it until tomorrow... talk to my boss and go talk to the people that did it... try to get a confession. From there, I'll see how much they give me and make my decision from there.
The whole situation is crappy... but dependin on what the boss says, and what they say... maybe I'll go with a HOK or X-otic color... that way if it happens again... I can match it easier than a custom color. Either way, cost won't be much different matching my custom color... or going with one of those.
it`s not that bad
i suggest PDR i got a real good guy here in chicago just too bad ur too far he could do it no prb and never know it was there
and with out drilling holes in the 1/4
can i haz bondo
I say if you are going to pay to have it painted, leave everything how it is...... Fix and primer that one spot and then wrap put osme airbrushed graphics on the car.... they don't have to be extreme, just make sure they cover that spot up. Extreme would be cool though

Nikki my dad just did a mercedes custom color job not too long ago. It was a CRAZY blue & purple & pearl combo. Well the guy wrecked it and had to have a fender fixed. He uses PPG paints, and couldn't find any stock color to match even close. The PPG rep in our area brought down a paint cam called a profit (maybe you've heard of one). He matched the color near exact. Another good one was a nova that he did 3 years ago silver with white pearl powder added. The guy cut a whole in his hood for his blower and then decided to take the blower out and needed a new hood. Of course the guy didn't keep any of the paperwork on the car, so my dad hand no idea how much of what to add to make the color and once again he brought in the profit to scan it and give him a breakdown of colors. That would be your best bet. Save you a LOT of time and money.
Officer: Do you know how fast you were going??
Me: Fast enough to get you to put down the coffee and doughnut!
Officer: (scowls)
Me: great, now I'm REALLY gonna get a ticket huh?
i used to work for sherwin williams automotive a while back...
ive color matched waaaaaaaay harder colors than that
find a guy thats good at tinting and blending... youll never even notice..
we had a machine that shot a picture of the color, and gave us a bseline to work with, check to see that your shops paint supplier doesnt have one...
a small blend of just the repaired area on the quarter and maybe a little blend into the door (avaioding the ghost flames) should have that good as new..

Can't do PDR... there's a GOUGE in the middle of the dent that didn't show up in those pics... where metal is showing. AND I don't have to drill holes in the quarter to get rid of the dent... there's a thing called a stud welder.... grind down to metal... weld in a stud with the gun... use the slide hammer that comes with it (it grabs the stud)... whalah!
I appreciate all your suggestions guys. We don't have any of the scanners around here that will scan the EXACT color... pigments... etc.
Eh... I wanted a new color anyway I guess. One that if something like this happens again, I can just order the paint and go from there. I'm seriously considering going with X-otic paint. I like their colors much better than HOK. I'll have to give our "local" dealer a call tomorrow.
The people that did that to my car weren't there today... but the lady showed up. She said "I wasn't here Friday blah blah blah" (I saw here there on Friday). I told her I need to talk to one of the guys tomorrow... or I'll have to call the lease office/landlord and go from there... calling the cops if I have to.
You may regret not calling the cops in the beginning.

Well IMHO,... if the middle of the dent is gouged... obviously a PDR is not going to work... and there's no point to pay someone to do PDR when:
1. It needs to be repainted anyway since there's metal showing
2. I can fix the dent for nothing... it's just the paint that's gonna cost
ok well i didn`t SEE the scratch so like i said no need for a smart ass comment

Fallen Angel, why are you asking for everyones opinions if you're just going to reject them, damn. You obviously think that repainting the car is the only way to go, what else are you asking for? No one is obviously going to change your mind.
-Nate (ZeeTwankyFo)
Nikki, I think it's time for an update. What do you feel the car needs now. keep the current color/scheme, or take it to the next level. look around here and make it go somewhere no one else has gone. I would suggest www.alsacorp.com when looking into "different" ideas for coatings.
Oh, and thanks for the email, the car needs more work still, but I'll take the BC/CC suggeston and compare it, pricewise, to the single stage at the local suppliers. I can't afford too much (I'll email you if your curious) right now due to some new problems, but I need to get the car repainted soon (after bodykit for sure, may be a while for that too)
mabye pull the dent and then paint a graphic or something on there.
sorry that sucks though
hope everything works out
