I'm trying to do a little paint touch up on my Z24. I have removed the rust on the inside of the door along the bottom, but I see the panel is galvanized. Do I need to do something special with it to make the primer and paint bond? Is one kind of primer any better than another?
Thanks
Primer promotes adhesion of paint to panels... using a sealer over a primer will help even further with adhesion.
As far as what types are better? It usually comes down to preference. I prefer (for everyday normal jobs... not custom work) DuPont. Any paint supplier could give you some information as to what may better suit your needs. DO NOT use rattle can primer!!!
ok, so for the rust at bottom of the doors, i grind it, then apply body filler, sand, prime, seal, paint, clear, buff?
thanx!

grind it all out (hopefully it's just surface rust??) (this would help if I could see a pic lol)
You can use filler, if there's really deep scratches from grinding... (I'd use a glazing putty/EZsand/Icing)... prime, sand, seal, paint, clear.... yeah. Not actually seeing what you're talking about that's the best I can say.
ok, thanx!
here is some picture of what i have to fix.
detailed instruction would be very appreciated since it is my first time doing this!
thanx for helping!
^ wax the car and u wont see that.
Moms&Dads talk to your kids, before its too late, tell them to stay away from aluminum wings.
yeah, i dont think that a wax will make the rust dissapear and new paint appear on it!!!!!!!
but thanx for the info lol!
Brand new paintjob, looks like all of your car needs it, either that or it is extremely dirty.
yeah it's very dirty! i might get a new paint job on summer 2006, but for now, i need to fix that before rust eat everything. i wanna built my engine before spending 2000$ for a new paint job!!!!
Eww that rust is worse than I was picturing. Grind ALL the rust off... use filler/glazing putty/ezsand etc... prime... sand... paint... clear...
You do realize that you're going to have to reclear the whole panel(s) where the rust is right? You can't just paint and clear one small spot and have it be fine or "wetsand and buff" out because the paint thicknesses will be different.
How much exactly do you know about what you're about to do?
ok, so i have no choice to reclear the whole panel (doors, quarter, hood)????
it's my first time attempting this, I have read the haynes body repair and painting manual... if that can tell what i know about it!
so any moore help would be welcome.
thanx again!
Well when it comes to painting, after you've applied a thin layer of filler/EZsand where the rust was and primed it... you want to wet sand the primer with about 400 grit to start, then 600... then wet sand the whole panel with about 1000 grit, and that there's no shiny areas. By wet sanding I mean use wet/dry sandpaper, soak in a bucket of water, and keep the surface you're sanding wet... dry off... make sure there's no shiny spots. MAKE SURE on the outsides of the primered area there's no shiny spots, and only prime where you've sanded it down first... primer/paint/clear etc will not stick to any areas that arn't sanded. The manual SHOULD (i'd guess) give you fairly good instructions for the body work part of it.
ok thanx.
but how long should i wait between filler, primer, paint, and clear???
aldo, after clear, should i sand and buff, or just buff?
thanx for helping,
the paint should say on the can how long in between coats... SOME different paints require different "flash" times. Primer you have to let sit overnight, sand... and paint right after (after of course cleaning the areas off very well).
After clear you don't HAVE to sand or buff unless you have some runs to get out
