Removing Wiper Arms

I need to remove my wipers to get the cowl off - I found the plastic cap that covers the nut that holds the wiper arm on ...

Do I simply unscrew this nut to remove the wiper? Anything I need to know about this before I do it?

Not trying to be paranoid, but I have never taken this apart and I kinda need my wipers from time to time...

Lol...too funny, Grasshoppa

A lot of the time they get corroded on, so you might also have to pry them up (gently) with a screwdriver after the nut is off and while you're polling on them

they require a battery terminal puller to get off, not very many people are sucessful with just a screw driver, and they DEFINATELY dont just pull off, unless you wanna screw something up. i have experience with more than a few cavaliers..... my dad and stepmom both each have one, my friend zeke has one and my friend terry has one ( actually he has a sunfire, but samething), all of which i took off their wipers in the same manner (with the terminal puller, there only like 3 or 4 dollars at auto zone).....
hope this helps

The trick is to push down on the pivot point while pulling up on the bolt end up the wiper arm...

If you don't push down on the arm- it gets binded up on the wiper bolt & makes it difficult to remove.

Thanks to everyone for the help - got them off, no problem.

I have some follow-up notes and questions about the cowl removal operation:

First, make sure you remember which wiper arm goes where - they are NOT the same. I got lucky on that one.

Second, when you put it back together, the lower windshield trim does NOT go back to its original shape. I was told that the first hot day would fix this problem, but I am going to try the heatgun first. There is a slight gap now between the cowl and trim.

By the way, it is not fun to put this piece back in the car. I had the joy of having to do it at work while a storm approached. It was not supposed to rain today.

There is a large hole in the passenger side under the cowl - looks like some kind of fan assembly down there - is that part of the HVAC system?

Just so you know, this project involved putting mesh behind the cowl where the screens are. It now resembles my vents and grill. Overall, I am very happy with the results (assuming the trim goes back into shape) and will post pics when I finish it up. I would rate this operation a difficulty level of 6 or so. (out of 10)

Thanks again,

Steve
