I have a spare hood now and was wonderng if I would be able to use fiberglass to make the evil eyes.
OK OK i know I should cut out sheet medal and have it welded it but I dont have access to a welder.
Ok I could go to a shop and get them to do it but I was wonerding if fiberglass would hold up b/c the hood isnt fiberglass to begin with.
I will probably end up getting the medal parts welded in but was wondering in trying to keep the cost down if fiberglass would work?
Just looking for opinions,
Regards,
J
its not worth it. it wont hold up. just take it to a shop and have them weld the pieces in. make it easy for them. get the pattern cut out and just drop off the hood and pieces. if you get it there in the morning, there should be no reason why it wouldnt be done at the end of the day. that is if you are going to finish it after they weld it on
Have the thing welded. If it is a OEM metal hood the glass will not stick, ESPECIALLY in that area. (slaming it and stuff) Metal and fiberglass do not stay boned for long, mteal and fiberglass have different ways their molucules expand and contract in the heat and cold. This meaning it'll end up cracked. Make a piece, then since it is your project hood just drop it of at a shop for them to do in their spare time sometime when they are already welding something else. Setting the welder up would be the most time consuming part putting those things on i would say.

Ya, like the masses are saying find a good machine shop, precut your pattern bend it to the shape of the hood and have them weld it up, make sure the guy doesnt lay one big weld across it otherwise your hoods gonna look like a washing board from the heat/draw of the welder, i would imagine you'll get alittle warpage going on anyway but it'll be horrid if they lay one pass, and like wink said if you do fiberglass it'll never stay bonded, the first couple times you slam your hood it'll break the bond and most likely the next time you get up to highway speed you'll see 2 big chunks of your eyelids blow over the car, You can however bond stuff to the middle you just need to really rough up the metal so the glass can bite into the metal, think of it like velcro the more fingers you give the glass to hold onto the stronger it is, thats why it'll never bond to the hood as eyelids not enough area to grab. if you live around missouri i might know a welder but he aint cheap, he is however the best welder in probably 150 miles if not the state.

What i did with mine was use some thick sheet metal and mounting holes and tabs so it could be screwd on and the tabs bent to hold it in place then put a couple layers of fiber glass then a ton of bondo. It would of been easier to get them welded but i had that stuff just lying around. It looks pretty good since the eye lids flow with the curve in the hood
Hey alan can you post pictures of your hood? That is a good idea what you did but I found a welder to do the welding for me for nothing. (a friend of my cousin) he will be welding it up for me once I get some sheet metal and get the patterns cut.
BUt one question for you alan the way you did it wouldnt you have to much material on top of the sheet metal? I mean it sounds like that still might crack when you close the hood?
Then I'll use some fiberglass or bondo to smoothen out any low spots and so forth then primer it up.
Thanks for the tips guys. I guess I dont need two chunks of fiberglass flying off my car on the highway.
