Problem with carbon fiber hood
Sunday, May 15, 2005 8:02 AM
I recently purchased a JSP SS style carbon fiber hood. Was all pumped up about it and when it got here I couldn't wait to open it! Well that was four days ago and now it is going back. There was about 3/8" 1/4" gap between the fender and hood on both sides and one major blemish about 8" long right over the scoop, then the miscellaneous thumb sized blemishes all over. My question to all of you is first: Have any of you ever had this problem with a JSP hood? And second: What have you heard about RKSport carbon fiber hoods? In my searches I have read that RKSport is not the greatest but I don't think it can be worse the crap I just got from JSP. So should I try another JSP hood and cross my fingers or should I go with RK this time? Also any comments on the JSP trunk lid are welcome as well. Thanks

My ViS Hood has the gap between the fender and the hood. U have to remeber its hand made, so theres gonna be inperfections. Its carbon fiber, its still more impressive then stock.

I bought a no name carbon fiber hood off ebay, it has a gap on the passenger side only. I am thinking about just drilling out the holes on the fender and pressing the fender in a bit to make the spacing even. Thats the only thing I can think of to fix it. I have one minor blemish on my hood. Nothing major for an ebay purchase.

Have the vis invader hood. Had to shave the latch to get it to fit properly. (thanks again darkstars) I;m convinced that an aftermarket hood will never just fit up perfectly without some moderation to it. Our cars all flex overtime and everything needs to be adjusted porperly overtime anyway. As for the poblem you had thats . The gaps could be corrected by adjusting the fenders but as for the fingerprints, thats just poor craftsmanship.

Anyone with a RKSport carbon fiber hood? If so how does it fit? Did you have to move your fenders in much? How is the quality of the weave? Thanks

what do you guys mean by blemishes?? R u talking about the actually weave or are you talking about the clear coat. I have the opprotunity to buy a no name CF hood but the problem I am running into is the clear coat looks foggy in some spots. What can I do to fix it?? And does anybody have the same problem??

Destiny: Its just one blemish in the weave, not the clear coat. I got mine off ebay for like $250.
Rich: I too had to shave my latch down. Did you just remove the secondary latch of the latch assembly. (Hope that makes sense)

for the hood having a 1/4" gap on both sides of the fenders 1 solution would be this:

where the bolts are, use a dremel and cut out a bit more of the opening so the bolt can slide farther back. Push the fenders inwards and then tighten the bolts down. This should help eliminate the gap between the hood and fenders.

^^ Exactly. This is what I will be doing shortly.

I have the same JSP SS hood and have the same prob. the hood is definately not wide enough.

if a product doesnt fit good and has imperfections, its not impressive at all. i'd rather have good stock pieces rather then crap aftermarket pieces. junk is junk

Rk's carbon is pretty bad, that's Comparing VIS to RK.
Vis is much better. Just got one small clearcoat blemish on the vis hood.

there are little rubber nubs on the front steel beam. there are 4 of them they screw in and out to help adjust the hood but keep it from shaking

on top of that. the latch in the front can be adjusted

i screwed mine in a little and moved the latch down i have to push a little to close the hood but it fits well..... i have 1/8 gap on both sides of the hood which is not bad

i bought my vis hood on ebay for 300

hope that helps you out a little

ive never had a problem with an aftermarket hood not fitting correctly....

from what ive heard and seen, VIS is the best bang for your buck as far as c/f hoods go. they fit well and look nice. if you want the top of the hoods, try fiber images. they are supposed to be the best. but ive never seen a hood of theirs in person.
