Paint??
Monday, June 27, 2005 7:21 PM
I have a 4 piece body kit that needs painted, and i am going with base coat-clear coat, because thats what the factory did when they made the car. My color is the Opal Metallic Blue, and was wondering how many quarts do you think i need to paint it thoroughly, both paint and clear quarts?

A mixed gallon of base and clear just to do a body kit??? (2 quarts base reduced = 1gallon of base... 1:1 mixed with DuPont and/or PPG) You can all but paint a whole car with that...

*ahem* anyways... to the author:

How much painting experience exactly do you have anyway? Metallics are more "difficult" to spray if you don't have much or any experience at all. If you don't use the right spray patterns and don't know what you're looking for, how are you going to know if the metallics are laying right? There's a lot more to painting than people think there is... and it does require "hands on" training. With body work you not only need to see what you're doing as far as making it even, but you need to FEEL what you're doing and you need to know if it's right or not... and be able to tell. With paint, of course you can't feel it... but you need to be able to see what you're doing and have the training to know if it's turning out right or not. What if you get fish eyes? What if you get other defects? What do you do about them? What if the paint is "lifting"? What psi should your gun be at? Which spray pattern should you use? Is it adjusted right?

Props for wanting to do it yourself... or wanting to learn if you don't have the experience, but a body kit isn't the way to learn. If you don't care... ok.

*ahem*

Well it sounded like you were giving him an answer not an example... so if you're giving an example... say you are, otherwise you're giving false information. So excuse me for not being a mindreader and you relax Mr "almighty god of auto body and paint knowledge"

Best bet is to have him look at the kit, then go to the paint store w/ you to pick up everything you need. Just my $.02.

Good color man, I seem to lean towards the ppg paint myself, but a quart of paint should do it { plus reducer}if someone knows what the heck there doing. two spayable cups of clear also.
