VHT Nite Shades turned out like a primer gray?????
Tuesday, August 23, 2005 7:14 PM
04 cavalier. i took out both tails, and the center bezel all to be tinted.

I sanded down the letters and everything else to make it as smooth as possible, starting with 200 grit and ending with 1000 grit.

I then used rubbing alcohol and scrubbed them as clean as possible.. removing all dust, wax, grime, adhesive, etc...

I used the whole can of VHT Nite Shades (probably could have used another can..)

The final product looks like a grey primer ... not BLACK, not tinted...

It's only been an hour or 2 since I sprayed them, maybe I'm being impatient. Also, I have not clear coated them yet..

also, in this pic, I have all the lights turned on (headlights are on, reverse lamps are on)

is this normal? am I just panicing? will clear coat clean that up? did I get a bad can of nite shades?

this is my first time ever painting anything.... thanks for the info

and yes I know, I didn't erase my liscense plate #... o well :p

Wow, that looks bad. Mine turned out fine. Maybe the climate was too cold. check the can for directions. Here's (was) mine:

i have never used this product, but it sure doesnt look like it worked very well. i think maybe cause you sanded everything it came out like this. i would get another can and see if it works. but im sure someone here who has used this can help you out much more than i did. good luck man. i can wait to see the finnished product.

give it several clear coats, and then buff it. it cleaned mine up allot

and your light are normal, you have to realize that your eyes are more sensitive than a camera, and you have the flash on, so that reduced the amount of light you see coming from your lights as well.

it's definitally not too cold here ... i'm in south carolina where it's always hot and humid ...

maybe sanding made it look nasty .... maybe because it was wet and humid and rainy... i don't know ... like i said this is my first time ever painting anything lol...

the only reason i bought this stuff is because all the pics i've seen on this forum have looked beautiful... but mine turned out yucky

maybe we put too much on, i don't know... tomorrow i will take one off and clear coat it and see if it makes a difference...

if not, what would be the best method to strip this stuff off and try again?

what grit did you sand with as a final sanding?

now I know I'm tired

hit it with a "light" 1000-2000 grit, and clean with alcohol before you clear coat it. and be sure to do this on a day when the humidity isn't so bad, and if it raining out just forget it for the day. painting it something where patience pays off.

considering your car is so wet and condensated.. i would wait till the sun shines before you get upset.. could just be a fogg overtop

just my .02 but with you sanding them down and the VHT being a clear type of coating it is showing through where it has been sanded if all else fails you might want to sand them all the way back down then clear coat it then spray the VHT over the clear coat just a thought though hope it helps some and good luck

and what i meant by VHT being a clear type of coating i mean you can see through it like window tent i figured i better add that before i got flamed

exact;y, if you want smoked lens, I'll trade ya, don't run a good set of Toyota tails, the 95-99 aren't available from GM anymore. so the value will be going up. since there were only so many made in the first place.....oh yeah they look cool as is anyway.

thanks for all the advice guys... i think most likely, they have that grey primer look is because I sanded the tails before I applied the VHT... maybe because it was raining outside, i don't know...

so I will take everyone's advice.. I will wait a couple of days and see if the fog goes away.. then I will try and redo it all.

How would you guys suggest getting the paint off the tails? pain thinner? will that harm/melt the plastic in anyway? or should I just sand it all off?

after i get the old paint off, I will spray a clear coat over the lights, and then try the nite shades again...

let me know if you guys have any other ideas..

i think the clear first will be your best bet...it's not going to go away...might as well just do it now
