Hey guys, I was just wondering what's the best method for removing window tint? I want to get the windows redone because the tint is purple... I bought the car like that a month ago, and the shops charge $60 extra for removal.
I was talking to my step dad, and he told me the way some shops remove the tint, is:
1) Spray windex on outer window, lay black trash bag over window and make sure it sticks.
2) Use razor to cut trash back to exact fit of selected window.
3) Spray inside window with a high-ammonia window cleaner.
4) Apply trash bag to tint, make sure it fits with as few bubbles as possible.
5) Buy beer, wait 1-2 hours while windows heat up in the hot sun.
6) Slowly peel off trash bag, window tint should come with the bag.
7) Use window cleaner/adhesive remove to remove the remaining glue left by the window tint.
Just wanted your opinions on this, and if anybody else had some good ideas. Thanks!
or if you dont care about the tint, just get a razor put a line in the tint and then take a plastic card and scrape it off. tint is easy to get off
Well, I was mainly worried about the defroster lines... this was for that
for the rear
peal off the tint, get some wax and grease remover from any auto body supply store or from autozone or someplace like that, go to the kitchen cleaning section of wal-mart or wherever and pick up a dish washing spong that has the fishnet looking stuff on one side, soak the sponge in the cleaner and scrub the window. I did this to my car twice and it never touched the defroster lines.
just use a heat gun on the outside, peel up a corner and pull the @!#$ right off.
quick easy and to the point, very little mess if any.
I just got my rear purple 3M tint removed from my non-j-body. I was going to do it myself, but the tinter told me that he would do it for $70. He warned me that since it had already started to finger in some spots, that usually means it will be a PITA. He also warned me that if I did not remove all the adhesive totally, that any old adhesive could make bubbles under the new tint, like there was a speck of dirt there. If he removed the tint, he would make sure that all the old adhesive was removed thoroughly. It was his business, so a crappy job makes him look bad.
So, I let him remove the 13œ year old tint. Good thing that I did. He started the car at 9am. He finished the retint around 3:30pm. He uses a small steamer to help him remove the tint. He sets the steamer on the back deck, and then hangs a plastic sheet to make a chamber. The lets the steamer run for a while, and checks so to see if the tint can be peeled off. He keeps rechecking it until it can be peeled. He said that the old tint came off in big pieces, small pieces, flakes, and slivers. Definately took him alot longer than expected.

IMO, $60 is a good price for removal for the rear window. If they will remove the rear and sides for $60, that is a definate good deal.
Side window tint is easy to remove, if you want to save a few bucks.

ok doe's no one do it the easy way i tent windows as a part for a living and the easiest way i have ever done it is rip the tint off soak the window with alcohol or soapy water then take a razor to the window the razor will also remove any burrs that might be on the window and all the dirt and it wont scratch the window at all give it a try if it doesn't work ill tint your windows for free lol

wow such big talk did your mom have to help you with that one or did you think of all that on your own...
and if you couldn't tell i was telling how to remove the tent from the side's he can do the exact same thing but use a towel and alcohol to wipe the left over glue off or he could use a glue dissolve compound and it wouldn't hurt the rear defrost....
as for your remarks i don't have to say anything else about it you showed just how intelligent you are

I was simply telling you that this is what he was worried about because you just assumed that you know the best way to do it and everybody elses opinion didnt mean anything. If you had read the post fully you wouldnt have made a fool out of yourself.
Calm down guys, thanks for the suggestions! I'll probably pull it off in the next few weeks
