i used to work at a paint shop and we charged around 1500 for a good paint job included light sanding and 2 coats of paint and 2 of clear coat. maaco is cheap but it may crack or fade after about 1-2 years. again like stated above you get what you pay for. But make sure you ask what is included in the cost ie inside door panels, trunk, engine bay, sanding, how many coats of paint and what type of paint they use ppg, dupoint. good luck hope that helps

A color change is going to be more expensive than a regular paint job because of the extra work that's involved doing the jams, under hood, trunk, etc.

Asking how many coats of paint they will use is pointless.... why you ask?

Well because depending on the color and how well it covers... will depend on how many coats they need to use.

For example... black can cover in 2-3 medium coats... the color my car is (which I made myself) took 7 coats to fully cover. More paint coats is not necessarily a good thing.

Paint thickness is measured in microns. When you start gettin up over 7 microns... the thicker the paint is, the more chance you have of it cracking/spidering/etc.

As far as what type of paint they use... that doesn't really matter TOO Much anyway (I'd stay away from single stage personally)...

Lately the only thing I think me and big daddy (both auto body techs/painters) have disagreed on... well it's really not disagreeing... he seems to prefer PPG... I prefer DuPont. Neither paint is really superior to the other. Each brand does make cheaper paints that don't have as long of a guarantee... but both are good... there's also Sickmann's, Sherwin Williams... then you have "custom" paint brands such as Alsa, House of Kolor, and X-otic.

You DO get what you pay for... you want to pay cheap... your paint job is going to be cheap.

Ask to see if the shop has pictures of the work they've done... and DO NOT go to a shop who will not guarantee their work. If they won't stand behind their work... turn around and walk out.

Sickmann's, sounds like something you get from painting too long without a good respirator. I have used a lot of sikkens in tech school though. Sorry had to raz you fallin.
A color change will probably be somewhere around 3 grand or more for an upper line of base clear, depending on the labor rates in your area. All shops are different, and many charge 6k for just painting the exterior the same color. The price may depend somewhat on the color you choose, A solid black is going to be a lot less expensive to buy then a red pearl or a tri stage color. I have quoted some color changes under 2 k with ppg deltron base and concept clear, and people must still think thats too high because I don't hear back from them. Many people don't understand the amount of work and material costs for this work. Ohh well, uhh ohh, better get maaco. Many shops don't even do complete paint jobs anymore, they do strictly collision repair where they can make better money. Go around and get some estimates, and then when you have it narrowed down where you want to take it, get references on the shops. Make sure you remove as much trim and moldings from the car as you can. Don't take it somewhere that will just mask everything off, masking around stuff will give a greater risk of the paint flaking off in that area. Most places won't pull the glass and stuff like that unless they charge quite a bit, but door handles, locks, tailights, ect should all be taken off.

Troy... I've never used the paint... and have only heard of it once or twice... so I'm not familiar with "Sikkens" at all lol... I'm a DuPont gal... well DuPont, Alsa or X-otic (I don't really like HOK much)

I use ppg, very user friendly and stayed somewhat the same throughout the years. Used Dupont at a few shops I worked at, but mostly be ppg myself. Back in school they had a bunch of different brands on the mixing banks, I guess so you could try different lines. I have never used the custom lines like you fallin, but eventually want to mess around with some airbrushing and will probably try some of the products. Southern polyurethanes has been getting good reviews on another site, but at this time they only have a few colors, mostly primers, and clears, ect. Suppose to be good products at a decent price.

The custom lines are actually my favorite.

HOK has very small color chips...

X-otic... has large chips... plus, if you wanted to do a Candee color... X-otic has transparent overlays in which you can place over any of their base colors to see what different colors and effects you can get with them... and know what they look like before you spray them. I love their stuff.

The Alsa Corporation also has a very wide range of different paints, additives, and effects products as well... and for the most part are pretty user friendly.

800 to do a color change, maybe if you don't pay any labor, materials for a complete alone can top 1000 depending on the color and what materials are needed for any bodywork. The chamalion paints are 20 bucks an ounce (about 1/3 a dixie cup) or 3 grand for a gallon. Now figure in labor to remove everything prep, paint, wetsand and buff. If you find someone who works really cheap and use a cheap single stage maybe 800 would be doable if just sanding and painting. Sandpaper, compound, tape and masking paper, tack rag, towels, reducers, harderners, lac thinner to clean gun, all that stuff adds up too.
