Mom is wanting to know what to get me for christmas, and I was going to get the windows retinted, but I was thinking about shaving off the door handles. The only problem is, I can see how this could be semi-expensive. Has anyone here done it? If so, got any suggestions on a certain kit to get, or how much the work could cost. And by work, I mean the removing of the locks/handles, and covering them up and painting over them.
Any info please?
1) search for kits. the best kit is spal
2) you cant get a quote like that on the net. it differs from place to place.
If you need a Spal kit, let me know. I have them right now for $120 shipped.
For the actual welding/shaving, you'll have to go to some local shops to get quotes.

I realize that. But I'm just looking for a ball park figure. And would there be any other work that would need to be done? Such as auto locks since I wouldnt have handles/key lock on the door. I'm just trying to gather some general info about the project.
the spal kit is the best!!
what you are asking of shaving the lock clyinder hole and the handles my price is at 1,000, yes it`s high i know but with quality comes a price
but i am sure you can find the price cheaper but you will sacrifice the quality
can i haz bondo

$1000? That seems a little pricey. All that would need to be done is to remove the handles & lock, cut a piece of metal to go over the area, then mold it on. Sand it down, and paint over it. I think that's all the needs to be done, other than installing the actual kit.
I may be wrong though. I don't know much about the subject..
yea you just listed about 1000 in labor

Well then why are you posting?
Hook up the shaved door kit, make sure it works for about a week before you decide to actually remove the handles so all the bugs are worked out.
Take out the door handle and locks.
Cut a metal plate to go over the handle hole, and a washer is fine for the lock hole
Grind down the area about 2" around where youll be welding.
WELD them in, dont use Bondo, dont use fiberglass to fill the holes!!!!!
After they are welded in grind it all down
Use bodyfiller to smooth it out
block sand it or use a board file otherwise it will be all wavy and look like sh;t
High build primer
block sand it
more primer
more sanding
Youll either have to blend the door or repaint the whole door.
A shop will charge you a pretty good amount. Its not a task to undertake if youre a novice at bodywork or have never done any bodywork at all.
Hmmmm, thanks for the help. I will call around a few shops and ask about it.
ya it`s not easy at all, if you have a metalic color i blend the 1/4 panel, r&i the tail light and drop the bumper down, and in some case`s i have pulled the 1/4 glass so i don`t have a tape line
r&i the belt moulding. side mirror, body side moulding, and the door frame weather strip
the price i do it for is cheap one shop i worked for charged 2,000 just to shave handles and to do any kind of custom metal work the price went up
you will pay allot for this to be done bottom line
can i haz bondo
hummm jason..120 for the spal kit...how long will you have it for that price? (please be at least a month or so
)
I just shaved my handles. To have a body shop do it, yes, I can see having big money spent on it. It is a time consuming process. It took around 2 hours per door just to get the solenoids set perfect and everything working right. That didn't include running the 12 gauge wire thru the door jambs, install of the alarm, and the body work involved.
