Roof Replace
Thursday, January 19, 2006 6:10 AM
Well, I have to get my roof replaced (Hood came unlatched and left it's signature on it...long story). Anyway, the damage is beyond filler so it needs to be reskinned. Everyone who I've told this too it seems keeps telling me to get a roof with a moonroof hole cut in it, then just get the stock moonroof gear from a collision yard. Kind of a 2 birds with one stone thing. Well I found the stock moonroof hardware and glass in a local yard for a reasonable fee. I assume since it has bean a while since i've bean in a moonroofed equipped J that I wouild just need the headliner that has the slide window shield and the relocated dome and switches. However I am not sure if the moonroof equipped J's have additional stability parts or not. Does this sound feesable? To me it sounds prety straight forward, it's not like i'm cut'n a custom hole in a roof, i mean i'll be getting a pre-cut roof from teh body show which I assume would come from teh dealer.

I'm open to opinions. Thanks guys and gals.

only thing i ca think of would be to cut the whole roof section out of a donor car, and have the whole section welded into your car.

your going to need alot of extra support if you have to cut the roof off to replace it. wheather you decide to get a sunroof or not, it dont think it will really matter since your already going to have to stiffen up the frame to put this new roof on.

I body shop guy said they were going to reskin the roof panel w/ a new section. The way he made it sound is that he's actually going to get a roof panel from the dealership or GM rather, cut the welds on teh old one and install the new one. On the estimate he's got it written as roof panel w/o sunroof. So the way i see it, if i got one witht the sunroof hole already in it, then it would be a matter of hooking the actual mechanics up in the new roof panel.

What like a convertable top. That would be a different story all arround. Major support braces then and alot of chop'n. Or else you were be'n sarcastic.

^^^no no. seriously. its like a canvas top for a large "sunroof". its like a bigger hole than a sunroof. i've been thinking about this myself.

Check that link out. I would have never known. I knew I should have taken a welding class at school. See my idea is to get the components for the moonroof and just get the replacement panel with the hole already in it. Then put the machinery in and wire it up.
