shaved door handles (cops/and tickets)
Friday, January 20, 2006 8:30 AM
I bought a door popper kit for my car aways back and been hearing in someplaces you'll get pulled over a get a ticket some tell me no. i can see if you flip your car and the fire department can open you door cause there no handle but isn't that why they have the jaws of life? anyone been getting a ticket for this i know it differs from state to state and country to country but so did the seat belt law at one time

well it is a law that you cant shave your door handles but what i did was just tell the inspector tothink about new cars with power locks that lock as soon as you strt the car or move so you hav no whay to get into the car anyways if it is in a accident regardless..seemed to work for me..phil

ahhh! this is true! i guess it all depends on the cop as well and where your driving. here if your caught at a street race the cops have a road block at bothsides and a inspection team that are slap happy with tickets even if your parked at the gathering point coffee shop! i like to go to the meets i race i'm more the slow and show i type. thanks 4 the tip philly d.

tickets for having shaved handles?? and where is this law about shaved handles? i've had shaved handles since june and not had a problem. took the car into the dealership to have it inspected in august and they didn't say anything about it. passed inspection with no problems

i thought it was more an insurance issue since if you are unconscious inside the car, someone from the outside cant get in unless they break the glass.

Well, I know that it is a law in the state of Virginia that shaved handles are illegal (cause they can't get you out quick enough in case of an accident w/out breaking the window or something). I live in WV (they have dumb laws, too...like you can have a frenched tag, but it can't be slanted...ha- they're too lazy to tilt their heads and read my ih8tckts plates lol) but VA is only a few minutes away and I'm there a lot. I called the VA state troopers and asked them about it and they said that it's not something that they normally give out tickets for unless they are provoked. So I guess if they want to be an as$ or if you are being an as$ to them, then there ya go.

I'm STILL thinking it over! I'm afraid that where it gets so cold here, I won't be able to get them open when they freeze.

I think if there was a bad enough accident that someone else had to pull you out, odds are the glass would already be broken

I live in ohio and have had shaved handles for almost 5 years. I know alot of cops and if you want to be legal in any state wire your poppers into your airbags so that if the airbags pop your doors will open. They said its a loophole in the law or something. Theres no way to really check just tell them you do its not like they r going to blow off your airbags to make sure your doors open.

just put a few wires and a button infront of the air bag , but have it hooked up to the door poper , that way they can test it , LOL

but use a removable switch , and tell them its to prevent theft

LOL

As I was reading this, in the background i heard "SPeaking of accident inspection." My mom is watching the new in the front room. I thought that was kind of neat becasue i'm reading this.

So what happens if you get rear-ended into oncoming traffic or you hit something and spin around or keep moving. Then your car is a gigantic weedwacker/death trap.

Check local statutes. In most states its illegal to do, you people just dont know where to look to find the right laws about modifying cars. Remvoing any safety feature is illegal, granted door handles arent really safety features but they are the only way to safely enter a car.

Ive had mine done since 2003, never had any trouble.

I had shaved handles on the widebody cavfire for 2 years without ever having a problem in MD. I took it through VA a few times as well without getting grief. My friend with an S-10 races at the tracks in MD all the time with shaved handles and hopefully I can with him really soon.

I guess it is all really up to the cops on if you are gunna get pulled over or not. Its like the tint laws, CT says 32%, more than half of my friends have 5% limo tints on their cars and have never gotten a ticket. Like I say its all up to the cops and its a chance you gotta be willing to take.

i have had shaved handles on 2 different vehicles for over 5 years and i live in california never once been hassled about my shaved handles and i just did it to sommer's cav about a month or so ago still no issues...plus it won't be a cop to ticket you they technically have to call in a fire marshall/fire cheif to cite you for the shaved door handles

Well in CA EVERYTHING you do is illegal. But I still have shaved doors and led strip tails. I get hasseld for th etails, but not my doors. Just do it anyways. Keep the old nadle and if you get a fix-it ticket, just velcro the handel to the door to show the cop. j/k

And the airbag thing is a really good idea.

Hmm If I remember correctly the new C7 vettes don't have door handles, but instead the window rolls down a couple inches when you hit the unlock button on the remote and there is a spot inside the upper door frame which you grap to open the door...? So...

Later,
