how long to wait after paint to wash car
Saturday, January 21, 2006 5:29 PM
Well I had to get my avenger front bumper re-painted and it was about 1 week ago when I got it back. Now When I first put my kit on it was last summer so I could gently hand wash it and not wax it. Since it is cold outside I use a touch free laser wash at Sparkle Car Wash and it uses high pressure water to rinse the car with. I know that I'm not suppose to wax the car for about 60 days but I'm concerned with the high pressure messing with the paint and making waves in it which I have heard of. Should I be concerned about anything with the paint only being 1-2 weeks fresh when washing the car?

Most shops hand wash the car right out of the booth. I'd call the shop up and see what thier suggestion is.

I think you'll be alright..just don't use anything that will scratch your new paint up

Hand wash will be fine, i don't reccomend any high pressure for a few weeks.

Since it is winter, cold weather will effect the complete cure time, so give it a few weeks before you apply any pressure to the paint.

Also depends if they have a "bake booth" or not.

I know for sure that they did put it in a bake booth. Thanks for the help!!

if it has been bakes i would recommend waiting at least 24 hours then a gentle hand wash will be ok.

i never ever heard of of such a thing who ever told you that is pulling your chain
after a bake cycle i let a car cool for a hour that is what ppg recomends and after that cool down time washing it with a power washer will not afect it in any way shape or form

even if it was painted in a cross draft booth and it dried ofr a day wet sanded and buffed high pressure will not affect it at all

ppg recomends not to wax for a month but to use a hand glaze or a show car glaze made by 3m

so in the answer your looking for is no it will not do any damage to the paint at all

I was told I can wet it down but no rubbing for 2 weeks but you can wet it down all you want but I think different shops do it different ways

again you can "rub" even using a hand glaze will not hurt the paint at all even if it was painted in a cross draft booth it does not matter
who ever told you that silly fact is smokin crack

Probably the best thing for you to do is call the place that painted it and ask them...

If you do something they don't reccomend and mess the paint up, they won't be at fault.

But if they tell you to do something and it messes your paint up, they would be.

depends on the painting methods used. ask the painter. mine, i was told one month. i was told that i can wash it with a wash without silicates or something like that, and it would be fine.

I just had a spoiler and a new trunk painted, and the bodyshop guy told me to wait atleast a week before applying any heavy washing on it.

You people understand at a bodyshop, they wetsand the clear down after the clear has been baked, and that doesnt hurt it, waht would be more rough on it, taking a piece of sandpaper and actually sanding it, granted water is involved, but not really for lubrication as much as for wicking away the sanding files, or taking a scrubber to it? Actually, they have to buff and wax the thig when they are done anyway, so, ya, point proven

dont use anything with silicone it traps any solvents in the paint that are still evaporating

yes you can wet sand and buff the day after but i dont recomend waxing for 60 days

also ive wetsanded and buffed 8 hours after paint and used a hose with a good amount of pressure to wash

i have not though used a high pressure washer but im sure if the panels where prep right the paint should not come off

you should be able to wash it as soon as its done being painted like big daddy said. if their telling you that you have to wait a month before you was it, thats ridicious. you should wait a month though to wax it to make sure the paint cures enough. wasnt it though shouldnt be a problem

if there's a run in a paint job what happens they send the car out and tell the guy come back in a month and we'll fix it? no it finshes baking and cool down blower them it's wet sanded and maybe clear is blown in. i seen a power washer mess up one paint job ...it blew the paint off because of improper sanding and cleaning so if it happens to you take it back to the shop that painted it!
