honeycomb trans am effect on tails? how do i do it

Hello, I was wandering if anyone on the board knew how to do the trans am inspired tails on the sunfire. I am referring to the honeycomb effect that im starting to see on some sunfires and even cavaliers. I was wondering how they are being done, like do I have to paint it on....where do I get the stencil from., or do i have to find a trans am in the junkyard...and get peices out of the tails? i dont know but anyhelp is appreciated. The only member I remember seeing them on is "stargrrl".

By the way, if anyone has of cars with it...please post. so other people will know.

thank you

What stargrrrl did is create a picture of the honey comb. Then she took them to a local shop that could take the picture and transfer it to vinyl. We took her tails in and they used a heat gun to apply the vinyl. It won't be perfect that way. it's hard to wrap it around the curves of the light. But they did a really good job on it.

why yes i did....

basicly, i did it the hard way....... i took a hex nut and traced it many many many many times on the back of a sheet of black vinyl. Then i cut out the pattern with an exacto knife. Yes i know, not a very quick process, took me all day actually.

I wetsanded my tails and applied the new sticker overtop of them and put a couplecoats of clear over them.

Like i said, its not the best way, but mine came out perfect

I can do the vinyl for you if you'd like... Basically like minitransam mentioned. Send me an email if you're interested.

^I worked at a vinyl shop and we could do it. All you need to do is bring in a picture of the pattern you want. The shop needs someone that can trace the pattern and repeat it, which obviously isnt too hard. The vinyl cutter will do the rest.

So let me get this straight, all of us with firebirds want to get rid of this pattern on our lights and you want to put it on your lights. Well good luck with it. Post up pictures if you decide to go ahead and do it.

I drew my pattern in Illustrator so it was already vector. I actually took a pic of TA tails at the track and tried to get as close as possible while taking into account that a Sunfire's tails are smaller.

I think the shop I went to charged $60 and it took maybe 2 hours. There was no sanding, no clear coat, just a heat gun. I've had it on there since around June of '02 and it still looks like new. Nothing is peeling off & it's been through the years of harsh northeast winters. The shop did a great job.

Here are some pictures.

And here are my 2 reference pics

Here's a pic I took years later of my friend's tails on his WS6

And I have a pic of mine next to his, but it's not scanned in. If you'd really like to see it I could dig around.
