Painting mirrors and door handles
Saturday, February 04, 2006 9:54 PM
Well since the weather is incredibly nice this weekend and I have some spare time, I thought I might fix GM's stupidity of not making the mirrors and handles body colour on the 03 LS Cavalier. I know what paint colour I need, and plan on using the 'body touch-up' spray-paint that Advance sells. What I don't know is the prep work. What grit sand paper do I need? Do I need any primer? If so, what kind? How many coats of paint? How many coats of clear? Do I need to sand in between coats?

I mainly want to do the mirrors this weekend, so I'd prefer steps/tips on that.

TIA for any help

for my interior i used 80, 120, 220, 240 grit paper
prime
240
prime 240
paint 240
paint 240
paint 240, til it was evenly coated
then like 2-3 coats of clear with some sanding if needed
i would like to assime this process would work for you too
just make sure you mask everything real well

Way to many steps, For the handles use some like 100 grit to get them smooth then work up to like 150 then 220, prime 220 paint then clear then wetsand with like 1500 or 2000 then buff out .
For the Mirrors sand with like 220 prime 220 paint clear then wetsand with 1500 or 2000 and buff out. Might be a good idea to also use an adhesion promotor on the handles just to make sure, Also wouldnt recomend spraypaint but if thats all you can do i guess try it and see how it works out. Just take your time.

well 1st remove the mirrors and handles
if the handles are a non-painted plastic wash in warm soapy water, scuff with a grey pad
clean using a plastic cleaner ppg makes it
apply the adheshion promoter let it dry 30 min`s apply sealer base clear
if the handles still feel slick wash it one more time with warm soapy water
if the handles are painted, just use a red or grey scuff pad no need to sand with all that paper why make a mountian out of a mole hil??

i believe the mirrors are a non-painted plastic, not to sure, but just take some sand paper if ya see black on the paper they are painted no black non-painted plastic
non-painted plastic----
wash with warm soapy water, scuff with grey pad, clean with plastic cleaner apply adheshion promoter let it dry for 30 min`s base clear
painted plastic------------
scuff it with a grey pad, wipe it with dx330 sealer, base, clear
hope that helps

The handles and mirrors are both non-painted. Taking the mirrors off is no problem.. but I have no clue on how to get the handles off.

if the handles have rivets use a punch to take out the inside part of the rivet take your drill using a 1/4` drill bit and drill out the rivets
both are unpainted then go with what i suggested if you have no experience in preping and or painting let a shop do it
or send them to me i can do it cheap

I took my mirrors off, masked the part I didnt want painted or sanded, wet sanded with 500 grit just to scuff the plastic a little(make it not shiny), dried them, then sprayed with 2 coats of rattle can touch up paint. They came out great. My doorhandles are painted already so I dont know about them, though I imagine it is the same. I would use a higher numerically grit like 400 or 500 so you dont see any sanding marks after you paint

big daddy the pads : 3m scratch pads? Red being 400 grit and grey 600/800 grit. Yeah if you never prepped before i would at least have a shop use the right primer for the parts rattle can primer sucks it's like water for about the same cost some paint shops will spray it for you bring the guy a coffee!

Them rivets can be a a bitch to take out they like to spin alot when you try to drill.
