Inner taillights not functioning!
Thursday, February 16, 2006 5:17 PM
I need some help. I checked the bulbs in my inner taillights, and they are fine. Problem is they are not lighting up when in reverse. Both filaments are in tact. Does the reverse lockout collar have anything to do with the lights? The wires look to be in tact, I'm not getting any warning codes or a fast turn signal or anything, they just don't light up. Makes backing out of the driveway a scary proposition. any help would be greatly appreciated.

the lock out has nothing to do with the lights....if the bulbs are ok, check the reverse sensor on the tranny

Where is the reverse sensor located? Wouldn't that send a code or something? I will def look into it when someone tells me where it's at. Thanks for the info.

its right on top of the tranny in the front ( i belive)
mine went out while it was still under warranty so i took it to the shop (mistake)
they just took a new relay and tech screweed it to the inside of my bumper (bastards)

it aint hard to find. if i recall right the tranny only has 2 sensors, the reverse sensor and the VSS. if you find a sensor wiht purple and yellow wires...wrong one.

ahh here we go, from the haynes manual

the back up switch is located top of the left end (drivers end) of the transaxle. unplug the electrical connector on the switch. unscrew the swtich witha socket (do not use an open end wrench). installation is reverse of removal.

if that don't fix it, then you most likely have an open somewhere in the circuit. which isn't hard to troubleshoot, assuming you own a voltmeter

Sure about the contacts. I'm thinking sensor. If it's topside access, I'll check it out later today. Thanks for the help.

the getrags seam to have a problem with the reverse light switch

if you turn the wheel to the right and look in from the opening right above the axle you will see a plug with 2 wires , you can reach in if its stock height and unplug it , then jump the 2 connections in the plug , turn the key on

if the lights work , then its the switch that went bad

I'm having the same issue. I checked the bulbs and they were good. I even replaced them to be on the safe side but got the same issue. Waiting for a pic of the sensor to see where its located.

me 3 man. and mines an 04 its still kinda new. i believe that happen when i disable my drl's at first i had a lose ground wire for the drl's and my lights flashed like strobe lights and thats what i think caused my reverse lights 2 go out. the bulbs and the fuses are good so if the sensor on the tranny is the same on the 03+ cavs let me know. cause i cant find it.

I had the same problem so I jumpered them to my running lights and put in a red bulb...now I have 4 taillights and no back up lights. Back up lights are overrated anyway
