Hey all I want to paint my car and ive got some questions:
1) What is the process of a quality paint job (pull and fix dents, sand primer, color, clear, etc)
2) How many coats of color or clear should be used for a quality finish.
3) What should i look for in a quality shop?
4) Is House of Kolor worth it? (Thinking of a gold base with a Dark pearl red top coat)
5) Tips?
Whats up people?

Can't help ya much here. I always just let the pros work it out.

Ditto here.

The BEST way I've found is to take a look around their shop a bit and see examples of the work they've done. Every shop I've ever been to (that does quality work that is) has never had a problem showing off a few examples of what they can do.
Also, if you see someone riding around your area in something you think looks good, don't be afraid to ask where they get their work done. I don't know many people that would pass up the chance to do a little bragging when it comes to their sweet car/truck.

This comes down to personal preference. If applied by a quality shop/knowledgable person, I've always thought HOK was excellent stuff. They have some awesome color choices too.

5) Tips?
Do enough research. Pick the right shop, etc. Make the choices YOU want to make YOUR car look how YOU like.
Sorry I couldn't help ya a bit more, but at least I bumped you back to the top.
little to add... on my little knowledge because i am about to get my car painted.
See if the shop is just spraying the car once, then clear coating. or are they doing the primer then another coat of the color u want, then how many layers of clear coat.
The shop i am going to is primering, then spraying white, then 3 layers of clear. Not the best but for a daily driver its perfect for me and my budget.
The amount of clear doesn't determine the quality of the paint job.
You don't want your paint being TOO thick, because then it becomes more prone to cracking, peeling, "spidering"... etc. Paint needs to be able to flex.
For example. Take a thin piece of plastic. A thin piece of plastic is going to have some flex to it, whereas if you take a thick piece of plastic, odds are it's not going to flex much, but when it "flexes"... it breaks.
That's about the best my brain will let me explain at the moment.
But ask to see the shop's work if they have any examples. MAKE SURE they guarantee their work, and it's in writing. If they won't guarantee their work, walk away.
HOK is ok... I personally have liked X-otic better. Are they worth the money? I think so. I think X-otic is a LITTLE cheaper than HOK (depending on what paint you want)... and the quality is amazing.
^^ i know i need more advice, just from talking to ppl thats what i was understanding, but i am glad i got the correct info now.

2) How many coats of color or clear should be used for a quality finish.

Yeah... I don't know where in the heck people get this idea that more clear is better. Too much clear is a bad thing... kinda like going to Maaco for a show quality paint job...
Eh, people have different feelings over paint....I loved HOK so much that I really don't want to settle for anything less than that when I finally do get this car painted. My suggestion would be to try to find someone who has done that before (gold base w/pearl red over it). We tried something that I'd never seen before with my kandy green cav...and it turned out awesome imho. Different than other kandy greens. Make it your own distinct color.
