Preparing Fiberglass Spoiler
Monday, March 27, 2006 11:24 AM
Hey guys, well i have purchased a RKSport touring wing in carbon fiber, and took it to a bodyshop, and they told me it would be $600 CDN (about $500 USD) to prep, paint and install it. This does NOT seem reasonable to me. What do you guys think? I was thinking of doing the prep work myself to reduce the price. can anyone provide a brief insight on that? There is a hole right in the middle of the top shelf that needs to be filled. How would i go about doing that?

TIA

well if you know nothing about body work then dont prep it yourself. 600cdn isnt that bad of a price considering they are gonna prep, paint and install it. you could probably knock like 150 off of it if you install it yourself.

as for the hole, the right way to fill it in is to weld in a piece

how do i "weld" a piece of fiberglass in? just soak some mat in resin and shove it in the hole? the hole is the diameter of a pencil, and the inside of the panel is hollow. I've done a lot of reading on doing prep work, although i personally don't have any experience, and that's not what i'm worried about. filling the hole is what i'm worried about.

btw, i accidently said carbon fiber in my first post...i meant fiberglass...and the hole is in the spoiler, not the trunk lid (to clear things up)

thanks

if you have no clue on how to prep anything for paint, dont do it your self
and doing it your self will be a waste of time becasue all we would do is do it again to get the part ready for paint
so the price is not too bad let the shop do the work

can i haz bondo

to fill that hole you need to eather fiberglass it your self or your going to been to have the shop fiberglass that hole!

So if there is a hole in the spoiler is it safe to assume it is used? If it is used is it painted already, if so that is why the price is so high.

The spoiler is new...the hole is perfect, and right in the middle of the cross section of the spoiler (i'm assuming they used it to manufacture the spoiler or something). It is not painted already. for prep work don't u just have to smooth it out with some bondo and ensure it is sanded smooth?

lol
like i said let a shop do it if you do it your self it will cost you more becasue you don`t know about preping or bdoy work, trying to save your self money
so take it to a shop

here is a pic of the hole, now say if i wanted to attempt to fill it, what would be the process? can i just squish some bondo with the fiberglass in it in there, then sand it down to make smooth? What do you guys recommend?

no picture!!

And before i even see the picture im going to say HE Lx2 NO

I am just going to sugest for you to go to a shop and have them do it! bondo and fiberglass dont mix to make it hard lol sorry but you need to uese resin to make the fiberglass hard and then you sand it done some and THEN you put bondon on it! If you still wish to prosue this your self post it i will try to give you step by step instructions and then you can see if you want to do by your self or not.
