00+headlight conversion troubles...
Thursday, June 01, 2006 4:57 PM
So yea.....How does it go from working like this..

to this after started the car up for the first time and driving it out into the driveway?

This is exactly what i did....

Now i have my driver side light dim, and my DRL light flashing... I don't even know where to begin. I know i have every wire going to where is suppose to be. I checked that a million tims before i soldered the wires together. Everything was individually taped connection wise and then taped again..

That would cause it to go from working properly to all of a sudden not by just starting the car up? Well i guess i will try buying a new pigtail tomorrow and see what happens with that... They are used pigtails to begin with ..

I also had someone warn me if my headlights didnt work to try disabling the DRLs.. by cutting the wire in ur guage cluster harness like Lenko found out.. But Shifted could also be correct.. ground gone bad or sumthing.. maybe its moved or sumthing.. did u solder connections or just use butt connectors and crimp? or did u just twist the wires together? I would try disabling the DRLs first then if that dont work go through all ur connections..

yes, the drl's can cause problems

at least it did with the one cavalier i converted. My orange one didn't have drl's so it was more simple.

Can either of you tell me where the wire is so i can cut it and see if that helps?

its hard to describe, its a dark blue wire, and it goes into your lighting switch on your steering column. Theres 2 blue wires if i remember so just trial and error.

Yea i found lenko's old post about it and i am trying to read up on it right now, once i figure it out I am going to go tear apart my car and see if it works. Even if this takes me to 3am to figure the freaking thing out!!

The DRL's are different.

95-99 uses the high beams in series... therefore half voltage.

00-02 uses the low AND high beams in series... half voltage each side.

There is no way to make it work with the DRLs. I tried every possible alternative. Disable them, it's pretty much the only way without re-engineering the car.

Well the DRL light is gone and dosn't flash anymore and your right john its Pin # B8 on the 99 cavs.. so i have 1 brand new 9007 pigtail in front of me and 2 relays. When the driver side does come on... its really slow. So maybe it is a grounding issue i know i yanked on it once really hard by accident so i am going to go wire that in now and see if that works... I hope so..

and its not the pigtail. I just wired in a brand new one and its doing the same crap.....????

Any other suggestions guys?

You may want to try this:
95-99 headlight conversion

Yea i have the 2 relays sitting in front of me actually just no extra wire laying around to give a crack at it tonight.

the center power wire isn't even connected here and its getting light still??

Dont even get me started on this, haha. It took my forever to get it to work right - i tried what Menitti posted, still didnt work (im sure i did something wrong) but I did notice that it seemed like the DRLs were giving it a problem. What do u mean by the driver side comes on slow? And i found out the same thing, I tried wiring the lights 30 different ways and every way it always lit up, just dim.

Like when i roll the switch to on.. the bulb seems to lag a little bit compared to the other one comming on. The old side marker bulbs i never cut off from the circuit i just removed the bulb and zip tied them up, i just tried putting the bulbs back in them to see if they would work and no dyce there. They don't even light up anymore... something is really messed up now. I just don't understand how it can go from working before to all of a sudden being a pain in the @!#$ ass... I cut the DRL wire behind the dash and it stopped the flashing lights and the DRL's... but now its all messed up...

Steve did you try running a postive wire right to the other postive passenger side positive cluster?

You have to look at the whole wiring diagram. See how you've got blue AND orange going to the left light? There's a relay on the bumper, that controls the DRLs. On 2000, it's in the fuse panel. Stuff moves around, is wired differently.

You might want to throw some relays on the bulbs.... isolate them from the wires. Might work.

LIke what Mennitti left a link to? Is that the kind of relays you are talking about?

Ok i really feel dumb right now... I was looking at the post mennitti left and he mentioned something about replacing the fuse to the driver side headlamp i was like where the hell is that? I remember only seeing EXT Lamps and thinking that was headlights. A little further investigation and i was umm... wrong i found the correct fuse and yes it was blown... Ah hahaha... I feel like a newb right now. I'll find out tomorrow whether or not everything is peachy when i start the car up again... my exhaust is a little too loud and my dog wakes up so yea... i'll let you all know tomorrow if were good. BUt right now both lights are bright as hell...

just go to a junkyard and get a sunfire harness, some didnt have drl's

that way its just plug and play and eliminates guessing

Seriously consider going to the auto parts store and getting different plugs. Those cheap RK Sport plugs overheat. I had a car with the conversion that overheated, the passenger plug shorted out to the bulb, and then fried the switch in the steering column. New quality plugs are only $6 a piece.

Fuse.. are u serious..

As for the plugs i just went to junkyard and got a harness and cut them off that.. Worked great.. I did plan on using the RK ones but after reading most posts of people having problems with there lighting i figured id just try off a junker.. figured maybe most of the problem was in RKs and so far i havent had any problems with any of my wiring.. Did u solder your connections or did u just twist them together? or did u use butt connectors and crimp them? Honestly i would solder em and use heat shrink tube then wrap with electrical tape. just to make sure u have solid connection all around.

Now if u get a sunfire harness..You have to make sure the pin out is the same.. by unplugging urs and take it with u to match it up..even then i dont guarentee it will work.. on my sunfire harness the pin out didnt match. i did have everything working but the headlight bulbs.. but i just ended up cutting the pigtails off them and soldered them into my 96 harness..

also, pull ur car out the garage and set the If sides in place with some painters tape or sumthing, then take a pic of ur car outside and ill chop the unpainted stuff white for ya so u can see how it looks with the c/f fenders..

I didn't use Rksport wiring kit, My buddy chris from RDFABS had the pigtails from a 00 sunfire laying around and those are the ones i used then just followed the diagram i posted way up top. I refused to thay the almost 400 something RKsport was charging and i only spend $318 for the headlight brackets, and the black euro headlights. But yea I will attempt to get the rear bumper and IF sides stationary today..

ah, well why are all the wire colors black? thats just what threw me off.. also i still stand with the Solder statement

Good luck with it. hopefully it works out for ya.

I to didnt see a reason to buy RKs kit tho.. hell i did my whole headlight swap for around 100 bucks.. alot of freebees lol.

and if u just tape the sides on there for the pic same for the rear bumper thats fine.. Just pm me a pic of them set in place of how theyll be when mounted.. i can erase the tape out of it too.. and no need to make a new topic in IM for it.. just PM me some pics and ill do it for ya. but if u want to make a new topic in IM go for it. just saying ill help ya out directly if ya want.

The all black one was the new pig tail i bought at like 8:55 last night, if you look on the floor you can see the one with the correct wires comming out of it. I am going to wire the original one back in there since there is no need for this other one. But yea i will get you that pics later tonight. I am going to try and fully attach the rear bumper.. well off to work on the car...

Re: 00+headlight conversion troubles...

Ok the headlight problem is fixed pull the car out and they still function like they are suppose to and the DRL's do noot come on. But MantaZ i won't be able to get pics to you for a little while, when i was trying to remove the rear bumper, i could not get the screws out of the plastic mounting brackets since they are rusted in there and i tried drilling them out, the bit snapped off and the remaining piece in the drill went right into my palm a good ways and hit a vein. So my left hand isn't functional for the rest of today and most likely tomorrow... Then the side skirts have to have a little piece trimmed a little bit so they will fit on the car properly. They wouldn't stay with tape. So i will get them to you eventually tho...
