Replacing Doors, Wiring the same?
Tuesday, June 06, 2006 6:36 AM
Alright, i have a chance to get a 04 Cavalier that had minor front damage for pretty effin cheap. Question is i want to swap doors.. Only because my power window motors are going out, i need to replace the windows in them too due to scratching.. plus i can see rust forming inside them... So swapping the doors seem like a pretty easy solution.. The 04 does have power locks and power windows just like mine.. My question is.. is the wiring on my 96 going to be the same as in the 04? wire colors? or am i gotta have to bust out the tester and see what wires have power in certain functions on both doors, mark em and then swap em and join the wires to what they operated as? Also.. i know on my old 00 that the radio didnt shut off till the door was opened half way.. but on my 96 it dont do that.. will that effect the wiring? like as if im going to have extra wires coming from the 04 door that my 96 harness wont have anything to connect to? This is not something i plan to rush so if i gotta go through every wire i dont have a problem with that.. i just looking for some answers and what to expect.. Thanks guys

Your best bet is to talk to Lenko. He knows the wiring between third gens inside and out.

BTW, what are you doing with the 04?

Well the 04 was clipped in the front by a truck, no bumper or headlights, hood and fenders are damaged.. the metal(cant think of the name of it right now, subframe? radiator sits in behind it) is bent.. My plans are taking the doors, interior peices that i need, wheels, suspension(to powdercoat, improve and replace mine), and use some of the sheet metal to repair rust on mine.. basically tear ir apart.. sell what i dont need or want and junk whatevers left.. Sunday i go to talk to the owners some more and hopefully be the time i take it home..

Pop off the door panels on both cars.... on yours, carefully unclip and feed out all the wires for things.... when you take the door off, you can feed them all out the hole in the side of the door (where the rubber grommet and corrugated hose is). You can unclip and cut out the wiring in the new door, then feed your original wires into the new doors. No need to cut or splice anything, assuming it's got power windows and locks to match your old car.

All the wiring is the same in the doors.... maybe the speakers are different, depending on if it's a Sunfire with Monsoon or not.... that's about it.

You should fix her up. your probably looking at about $1000 or so to fix up and then the cost of the car from who ur buying it from. Then go sell it for about 6,000-8,000. The only problem being that it's probably got a salvaged title (maybe, maybe not) so to some people it might look like a bad car but as long as it's fixed right, it's fine.
We built my car like that and it's got a salvaged title but it's completely fine.
Then after you made the $4000-$6000, you could buy new doors, new sheet metal, new goodies.

Just an idea, thats what I would do.

how's the yard out your way for 2k headlights and corners? My yards all suck. The one wanted 99 a piece for headlights, the next wanted 100 something for each one. That wasn't including corner lenes.
