Fresh Paint?
Thursday, June 22, 2006 11:07 AM
I just got my car back from the body shop after they fixed some of my paint chips and dings. I was just wondering, how long should I wait to put some wax on. I am driving downstate friday night so I will wax before I leave regardless, I'm not driving without wax on the car. But what is the ideal amount of time to wait for wax? thanx

I guess I will just have to pretend it has been 90 days!! damn. I thought it was like a week or two. oh well. I'm not driveing 400 miles this weekend on fresh unwaxed paint!! I guess Im going to have to do a slow carefull waxing.

what was the point of asking then? your not suppose to wax for atleast 30 days to let the paint fully cure. if you wanna risk your paint job cuz your too impatient to wait then go head

Im not being impatient really. I know i kinda came off that way.

Let me ask you this, would you recommend driving 400 miles without it waxed, or wax it carefully before i drive that far?

I assumed it would be better to wax it, but maybe I am wrong.

Your going to run the risk of ruining your fresh paint if you wax it. The wax seals the paint, it won't properly cure if you wax it. Drive the 400 miles unwaxed, there is no question here.

Driving it unwaxed won't do any damage. I think i've waxed my car twice in 6 years, and i haven't had any trouble.

Well, thanks for the answers. Shows you what I know. I assumed driving without any sort of protection would be worse. I guess I will wax it much later then. I just got the hood painted, would you guys suggest a bra? I have one some where.

its fine to wash, you can wash it really good before you leave but dont wax it

if you wanna protect the paint that bad just get that blue painters tape and mask off the front of your car. alot of people do it when they go to the bash

dont bras rub on the paint at high speeds? I wouldn't bother with a bra.

That was my next suggestion, painters tape. I really appreciate the help and answers fellas. I have never cared about the paint before, its funny how a fresh paintjob can make you feel. I dont even want to drive it, and that is strage for me. I drive everywhere. I hope the paint lasts.

DO NOT wax the car before 90 days. When you wax a car, the wax seales up the "pores" in the clear coat. If you wax it before then, it will seal up the pores, and not let the paint cure right, and dull out and cloud up the clear.

So... sure, you CAN wax it,... if you want to pay to have it repainted again.
